In high school volleyball last night…
• Houghton swept West Iron County 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-13).
• Calumet got past Hancock 3-1 (25-14, 25-16, 23-25, 25-16).

• Baraga got past Ontonagon 3-2 (25-21, 25-6, 23-25, 23-25, 15-9).

Recent wins over Forest Park and Ontonagon have vaulted the Lake Linden-Hubbell football team nearly to the top of the final Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association poll of the season. Unbeaten North Central again dominated the voting in the eight-player list. The Lakes nosed out Pickford for second place, with the Trojans and Munising tied for fourth. Lake Linden will host Forest Park in the opening round of the playoffs Saturday. Coverage will begin at 1:10 on KBear 102.3. Marquette edged Westwood for the top spot in the 11-player poll, with Kingsford third and Negaunee fourth. Calumet finished fifth, and Menominee was an honorable mention. Calumet opens the playoffs Friday night at Menominee. Coverage begins at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

College Volleyball

The Tech volleyball team dropped a tough 3-2 (19-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 10-15) match at Minnesota-Duluth last night. The loss ended the 20th-ranked Huskies’ 12-game winning streak. Anna Jonynas had 21 kills and 21 digs. Laura DiMarchi had 55 assists.

College Soccer

The Finlandia University men’s soccer team wraps up its season at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago this afternoon.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Washington Capitals tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Philadelphia 76ers tomorrow.

MLB

The Atlanta Braves defeated the Houston Astros 6-2 in the opening game of the World Series last night. It was a costly win, though, as Atlanta starter Charlie Morton left the game in the third inning with a fractured fibula. The injury apparently occurred in the second inning, when he was struck in the leg by a line drive. He will miss the rest of the series. Game two will be played tonight in Houston.

NFL

The Detroit Lions have cut cornerback Daryl Worley. Worley was burned a couple of times in Sunday’s loss to the Rams, but it’s not clear whom the Lions have on their roster to replace him.

Former Detroit Lions linebacker Mike Lucci has died. Lucci was a six-time team captain, and three-time team defensive MVP in the late ’60s and early ’70s. He made the Pro Bowl in 1971. He was 81 years old.
