Virtual Canal Run in Progress – Wednesday Sports Wrap

11 Major League Baseball umpires have opted out of the upcoming season because of COVID-19 concerns. Of the 76 full time umpires, 20 are age 55 or older. Those who opt out because of age or existing health issues will be paid. Replacements will be drawn from the pool of Triple-A minor league umpires.

Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League play this evening…
• At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium, Bucko’s/Labatts meets McGann’s/Northern Auto at 6:15, then faces Monte/Coke/UP Splice at 7:45.
• At Hurontown, A and S Industrial plays Koppers at 6:15, and Downtowner Two at 7:45.
• At the Hancock Driving Park, Auto Pro/Thermoanalytics and Pat’s Foods/Bucko’s play a doubleheader beginning at 6:15.

Running

The extended Hancock Canal Run continues through Sunday. The on-site race planned for this Saturday was canceled some time ago because of COVID-19 concerns. It was replaced with a virtual event. Pick your event and sign up online. Run or walk anytime through Sunday, and submit your result.

The Marquette Marathon, which was scheduled for Labor Day weekend, has also gone virtual.
