MLB
The Detroit Tigers staked Justin Verlander to an early lead, and he made the most of it, in a 6-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins yesterday. With 10 strikeouts, Verlander became only the second pitcher in Tigers history to record more than 2,000 in his career (Mickey Lolich is the other). He pitched shutout ball for six innings, surrendered a run in the seventh, and was charged with two more in the eighth when two runners he allowed on base came in on a single off reliever Alex Wilson. Ian Kinsler led the offense with three hits, including a home run. Kinsler has homered in four consecutive games – the first Tigers leadoff hitter to do that since the late Dick McAuliffe in 1969.
After sweeping the Twins, the Tigers have today off, and begin a home set against the Rays tomorrow night. Anibal Sanchez will start against Matt Andriese. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Pitcher Shane Greene’s troublesome blister seems finally to have healed. He’s scheduled to make a rehab start for the West Michigan Whitecaps Friday night.
The Milwaukee Brewers led the Chicago Cubs 1-0 heading into the ninth inning, but wound up suffering a 2-1, 13-inning loss last night. Chicago tied the game with a run off Milwaukee closer Jeremy Jeffress in the top of the ninth. They won it when Cubs reliever Travis Wood drew a bases-loaded walk off Carlos Torres in the top of the 13th. Milwaukee pushed a runner to third base in the bottom of the 13th, but couldn’t bring him home. The loss spoiled an effective start by Jimmy Nelson, who pitched 7-1/3rd innings of shutout ball.
That series concludes in Chicago this afternoon. Junior Guerra will pitch against Jason Hammel.
