MLB – Verlander Throws One-Hitter
Justin Verlander pitched eight innings of no-hit ball last night, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Los Angeles Angels 5-0. Verlander’s bid for his third career no-hitter ended when Chris Ianetta led off the ninth inning with a double that landed just fair on the left field line. Verlander then retired the next three Angels batters to complete the shutout. Miguel Cabrera, J.D. Martinez and Nick Castellanos homered for Detroit. Game details are here.
The Tigers conclude that home set against the Los Angeles Angels this afternoon. Randy Wolf will start against Matt Shoemaker. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Detroit starter Shane Greene will undergo surgery this morning to correct a problem with an artery in his throwing shoulder. He’ll miss the rest of the season, but should be ready for spring training. The condition has caused numbness in his throwing hand, and may explain why his effectiveness diminished over the summer.
The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Cleveland Indians 6-2. Jimmy Nelson walked a career-worst eight batters before leaving in the fourth inning. He was charged with five runs, and took the loss. Khris Davis homered for Milwaukee. Game details are here.
The Brewers have today off, and host the Cincinnati Reds tomorrow night. Taylor Jungmann will pitch against Raisel Iglesias.
