VerHagen Slammed as Tigers Fall – Friday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Detroit Tigers’ miserable month continued with a 10-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners last night. Drew VerHagen served up a grand slam, and was charged with seven runs over four innings in his first start of the season. John Hicks homered for Detroit.

The Tigers have won just three games in July. They continue that series in Seattle tonight. Daniel Norris will pitch against Yusei Kikuchi. Pregame coverage will start at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

To make room for VerHagen on the roster, the Tigers sent reliever Daniel Stumpf to Toledo.

Detroit has also signed pitcher Jake Thompson to a minor league deal. Thompson was drafted by Detroit in 2012. He pitched parts of several seasons with the Phillies, and most recently with a professional team in Korea.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and host the Chicago Cubs tonight. Gio Gonzalez will start against Kyle Hendricks.

As expected, the Brewers have placed pitcher Jhoulys Chacín on the injured list with an oblique strain.

Twilight League Baseball

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball last night…
Superior National Bank-Stanton edged Dean Kangas-State Farm 7-6 in the 19th inning of a game that was begun on July 9th, and suspended because of darkness. Because of the seven innings played to resolve that game, last evening’s regularly-scheduled contest was not played.
– The game between REL-Mohawk Technology and Garnet Garage was postponed.

Fast Pitch Softball

The Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League tournament will be held tomorrow at the Bone Yard in Lake Linden. Superior National Bank will play Crush/Diamond House/Baby E’s at 10:00. Our coverage of all three games will begin at 9:45 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

High School

The Lake Linden varsity volleyball team is having a car wash, bake sale and can drive tomorrow from noon until 4:00 at the school. Returnables may be dropped off during that time.

Former Finlandia University hockey player Timo Kocar has signed a contract to play professional hockey in his native Slovenia.

Fishing

The Copper Country Walleye Association Angler and Young Angler Walleye Tournament will be held tomorrow on the waters of Portage and Torch Lakes. The rules meeting and breakfast will take place at the Chassell VFW at 7:00. Fishing will be open between 8:30 and 2:30. The awards ceremony and barbecue will follow, from 2:30 until 4:00. Golf

Scoreboards attached to the clubhouse at Michigan Tech’s Portage Lake Golf Course have been officially named after the late Leo (Rob) Roy. Roy spent many years on the PLGC Board of Directors. He later became an employee, scoring more than 20 events per year for more than 15 years. The naming ceremony took place Wednesday on what would have been Roy’s 86th birthday.
