VBall Wins for Calumet, Jeffers – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last evening…
• Calumet swept Ishpeming 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-18). Helen Beiring led the Copper Kings with 11 kills. Jana Loukus had 17 digs.
• Hancock fell to Negaunee 3-0.
• Ontonagon defeated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-13).
• L’Anse fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 3-1 (18-25, 25-17, 23-25, 16-25).
• Baraga lost to Ewen-Trout Creek 3-2.
• Jeffers blanked Ironwood 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-22). Raena Kangas led the Jets with 7 kills.
• The Chassell-Watersmeet match was canceled.

In volleyball tonight…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City plays at Chassell.

College Soccer

The Finlandia men’s soccer team lost 7-2 at Illinois College last night. Hasani Edgar and Osvaldo Cruz scored for the Lions.

College Cross Country

Michigan Tech’s Clayton Sayen has been named the GLIAC Men’s Cross Country Player of the Week. The former Houghton High School standout took first place individually at the Roy Griak Invitational last week.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Minnesota Twins last night. Tyler Alexander allowed a run on four hits over six innings, and took the tough loss. José Ureña gave up two runs in the seventh. Detroit scored two in the top of the ninth to make it close, but Robbie Grossman struck out with a runner on first to end the game.

The Tigers visit the Twins again tonight. Casey Mize will start against Michael Pineda. Coverage will begin at 7:20 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost 6-2 to the Saint Louis Cardinals last night. It was the 17th straight win for the Cards, who clinched a wild card playoff berth. Brandon Woodruff gave up two runs on seven hits over four pitch-limited innings. Jandel Gustave took the loss. Luis Urías homered.

The Brewers play in Saint Louis again tonight. Adrian Houser will pitch against Miles Mikolas.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings begin their exhibition schedule tonight against the Blackhawks in Chicago. Listen for regular-season Red Wings games again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

High School Broadcasts

 • The Calumet football team entertains Iron Mountain Friday night. Coverage begins at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts Stephenson Saturday afternoon. Coverage will start at 1:10 on KBear 102.3.
