VB Wins for Kings, Jets and Hornets – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
– Calumet swept Hancock 3-0 (
25-15, 25-21, 25-15). Molly Larson had seven aces, Elli Djerf had 11 kills, and Cami Johnson had 13 digs.
– Jeffers blanked Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-10). Lilly Turner had seven aces and Marissa Nordstrom led the team with six kills.
– L’Anse got past Chassell 3-1.
– Baraga v Watersmeet – not reported.
– Ontonagon v Bessemer – not reported.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University volleyball team travels to Ashland today for matches against North Central University and Northland College.

The Lions women’s soccer team plays at Wisconsin-Superior. The men’s team travels to Coe College in Iowa.

Finlandia’s Daisia Knowles has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer. Knowles led the defensive effort that gave up just one goal and three shots on goal during the Lions’ wins over Maranatha Baptist and Lakeland.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 7-2 to the Cleveland Indians last night. Zac Reininger led off a bullpen night for Detroit, gave up four runs over two innings, and took the loss. Dawel Lugo homered.

The Tigers visit the Indians again tonight. Spencer Turnbull will pitch against Aaron Civale. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift. 

After a good showing Monday night, Tyler Alexander will finish the season in the starting rotation. Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire says Edwin Jackson will be moved to the bullpen.

The Milwaukee Brewers kept rolling last night, with a 3-1 victory over the San Diego Padres. Lorenzo Cain and Mike Moustakas homered

The Brewers entertain the Padres again tonight. Adrian Houser will start against Dinelson Lamet.

The Cardinals and Cubs both lost, so Milwaukee moves into a second-place tie with Chicago in the National League Central Division, two games behind Saint Louis. The Cubs and Brewers are tied for the final wild card playoff spot.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings opened their preseason campaign with a 5-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks last night. Michael Rasmussen’s goal late in the third period broke a 3-3 tie, as Detroit used mostly minor-leaguers. The Wings continue their preseason schedule tonight in Chicago. NFL

The Detroit Lions have shuffled back-up quarterbacks – again. Yesterday, the team released Josh Johnson, who was signed during training camp, and won the job. They brought in Jeff Driskel, who started five games for the Bengals last year, but was released after suffering a hamstring injury earlier this fall.

The Lions have also released running back C.J. Anderson, and claimed Paul Perkins off waivers from the New York Giants.
