VB Wins for Kings, ‘Dogs, Lakes and Hornets – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night…
– Houghton fell to Iron Mountain 3-0.
– Hancock blanked Westwood 3-0.
– Calumet swept Negaunee 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-9).
– Lake Linden-Hubbell won both of its games at its own triangular, defeating Watersmeet 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, and 25-13) in a three out of five match, and then downing Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 2-0 (25-15, 25-12) in a two out of three match.
– Chassell v Bessemer – no report.
– L’Anse got past Ishpeming 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-13, 15-9).
– Ewen-Trout Creek swept Ontonagon 3-0.

Finlandia
Five Finlandia University student-athletes have been honored by the American Collegiate Athletic Association. Kirsten L’Esperance and Haley Makela have been named the women’s soccer offensive and defensive athletes of the week. Noah Raisanen has been named men’s soccer defensive player of the week. Ashley Aho and Chris Xuan have been named women’s and men’s runners of the week.

MLB
In the baseball playoffs, the Boston Red Sox advanced to the American League Championship Series last night by holding off a late rally, and defeating the New York Yankees 4-3. The Sox won the Divisional Series three games to one. They will face the Houston Astros in the ALCS beginning Saturday.

The National League Championship Series between the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers begins Friday.

Neither Mario Impemba nor Rod Allen will return to the Detroit Tigers television booth next season. The two had worked games for 16 seasons, but were suspended after their uneasy personal relationship erupted into a physical altercation after a game in Chicago on September 4th. Impemba’s contract with Fox Sports Detroit expired at the end of the season, and will not be renewed. Allen’s agreement included a network option for next season, and reports indicate that an exit settlement is being negotiated.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines will begin training camp tonight at 9:00 at the Colosseum. Anyone interested in joining the team is invited to attend. The cost for training camp is $50.00 per player, which due at the first skate the player attends. The Detroit Red Wings host the Toronto Maple Leafs tomorrow night. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 7:10 on KBear 102.3.
