High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Calumet swept Negaunee 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-12). Laina Kariniemi had 31 assists and 10 digs. Allie Bjorn had seven kills, seven digs and three aces. Jackie Kiilunen had seven kills and 11 digs. Maddie Torola had eight kills, two aces and two blocks. Caitlyn Strom had eight kills, three aces, three blocks and 11 digs. Hear the game replay here.
• Houghton blanked Iron Mountain 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-17).
• Hancock defeated Westwood 3-0.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Watersmeet 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-13). Abi Codere led the Lakes with seven kills. Amy Mahrley served four aces, and Payton Goldsworthy had 18 assists.
• Chassell fell to Bessemer 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-19). Kylee Sohlden paced the Panthers with six kills, four digs and an ace. Dusty Lippold had four kills and 10 digs. Gracie Moyle, Lain Bellow and Megan Holombo each had 2 aces.
• Jeffers cruised past L’Anse 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-14). Both Sara Johnson and Taylor Heinonen of the Jets recorded 11 assists. Kaeda Rajala led Jeffers with nine kills, and Mia Nordstrom had five kills and eight aces. For the Purple Hornets, Mylee Londo logged 12 kills, Brooklyn Dompier had six, Emmy Mensch had four, Keira Dakota had three, Madi Peterson had two, and Elle Kromer had one.

MLB

The MLB divisional playoff round continues.

In the American League yesterday…
• The Rangers dispatched the Orioles 7-1. Texas wins that series 3-0.
• The Twins fell to the Astros 9-1. Houston leads that set 2-1. That series continues in Minnesota tonight.

In the National League tonight…
• The Braves visit the Phillies. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Diamondbacks host the Dodgers. Arizona is up 2-0 in that series.

NBA

Former Pistons assistant coach Brendan Malone has died. Malone served on Chuck Daly’s staff, as Detroit won NBA titles in 1989 and 1990. He developed the “Jordan Rules,” a physical defense that was designed to slow down Michael Jordan and the Bulls. Malone served as head coach of the Raptors in their inaugural season. His son, Michael, is the head coach of the Nuggets. Brendan Malone was 81.

Running

The Miles for Music 2.5k/5k run will take place Sunday. The event is a fundraiser to help the Lake Linden school music program. Check-in opens at 9 at the Memorial Union Building, and the races begin at 10, with live music along the route. For registration and additional information, click here.
