Michigan Tech soccer goalie Kirsen Hudak has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Hudak stopped eight shots during the Huskies’ win over Saginaw Valley State on Friday, and added another save as Tech blanked Northwood on Sunday.

The Chicago Cubs scored four runs in the ninth inning last night, and defeated the San Francisco Giants 6-5 to advance to the National League Championship Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers extended their Divisional series by edging the Washington Nationals 6-5. That set is tied at two wins per team, and will be decided tomorrow in Washington.

As expected, former Detroit Red Wings forward Teemu Pulkkinen was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Wild yesterday. The Wings finalized their roster yesterday by awarding the final spot to Andreas Athanasiou. Anthony Mantha will start the season in Grand Rapids. Detroit will open its NHL season tomorrow night in Tampa Bay. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Lions have signed veteran running back Justin Forsett. He played the past two seasons with the Ravens.

The annual Keweenaw Cup Cyclocross Races will be held this weekend at Copper Harbor. Events include the Downtown Hoedown on Saturday, and the Top of the World Smackdown on Sunday. For full details and registration information, click here.
The Copper Country Ski Tigers Nordic Race Team will hold its Nordic ski gear swap Saturday at the Houghton High School Multi-Purpose Room. Sellers pay a 15 percent commission, with a maximum of $50.00. Drop off items to be sold on Saturday morning between 8:00 and 9:45. The sale runs from 10:00 until noon. Pick up your proceeds or unsold items between 12:30 and 1:30 after the sale. Registration for Ski Tigers is now open on line – click here.
