VB Wins for Gremlins, Kings and Jets – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night…
– Houghton defeated Hancock 3-1.
– Calumet downed L’Anse 3-1 (25-9, 25-13, 24-26, 25-11).
– Chassell v Ontonagon – not reported.
– Jeffers edged Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-2 (18-25, 25-13, 25- 14, 22-25, 15- 10).

In cross country, at the Tracy Strom Invitational at Ishpeming yesterday…
– Ishpeming won the boys meet, with Houghton second, and Chassell third. Joe Wood of the Gremlins finished third individually, with Branden Peterson eighth, and Evan Labyak 10th. For the Panthers, Ben Tuomi placed fifth, and Daba Holmes ninth.
– Hancock won the girls meet, followed by Houghton and Chassell. Calumet finished sixth. Hancock’s Kalli Chynoweth placed seventh overall, with Ellie Sturos eighth. Anabel Needham of the Gremlins placed second individually, with Maria Velat fourth, and Ingrid Seagren sixth. Chassell’s Lela Rautiola came in third, and Calumet’s Clarity Gipp placed ninth.

In high school football tonight…
– Calumet plays at Iron Mountain. The unbeaten Copper Kings would clinch a playoff berth with a victory tonight. Our coverage will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Hancock travels to Westwood. Our broadcast will begin around 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift and TheLift.com.
– Houghton entertains the Gogebic Miners – the game will be played at Sherman Field.
– L’Anse plays at Negaunee.

In football tomorrow, Ontonagon plays at Carney-Nadeau.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team is in Watertown, Wisconsin for a triangular at Maranatha Baptist today. The Lions will face Northland College this afternoon, and the host Sabrecats this evening. They’ll play Mount Mary University in Milwaukee tomorrow afternoon.

The Finlandia football team will open its MIAA schedule at Olivet College tomorrow afternoon.

MTU
The Michigan Tech volleyball team plays at Wayne State tonight, and Ashland University tomorrow afternoon.

The Tech football team will host Saginaw Valley State tomorrow at 1:00 at Sherman Field.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team travels to Davenport University tomorrow afternoon.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers lost to the Minnesota Twins 9-3 last night. Detroit took an early three run lead, but starter Francisco Liriano developed back tightness, and had to leave the game in the third inning. Louis Coleman replaced him, as the Twins scored five runs. The Tigers will begin their final series of the season at Milwaukee against the Brewers tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Zach Davies. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers had yesterday off. The Cubs won, and now lead Milwaukee by a game in the National League Central Division. Each team has three games remaining. Chicago closes the season against the Saint Louis Cardinals.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings’ preseason schedule continues tonight against the Maple Leafs at Toronto. Listen for regular-season Red Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Minnesota Vikings fell to the Los Angeles Rams 38-31.

The Green Bay Packers host the Buffalo Bills in a 1:00 game Sunday. The Detroit Lions visit the Dallas Cowboys in a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
