Al Avila

The Detroit Tigers’ days of signing big-name, big-money free agents may be over. General Manager Al Avila told reporters yesterday that the team has been living beyond its means, and needs to be more financially responsible. He outlined a plan in which the club will work harder to develop talent through its farm system. He refused to call it “rebuilding,” but said that most players on the current club would be available to other teams for the right offer. Avila said the only free agent signings to expect this season will be a backup catcher, and some upper level minor-leaguers. He also said he’ll wait until the last minute to decide whether the club will exercise expensive options to keep outfielder Cameron Maybin and closer Francisco Rodriguez. That deadline will come three days after the final game of the World Series.

Houghton and Hancock wrap up their football seasons in the Copper Bowl game Friday night. Lake Linden-Hubbell tries to close out an unbeaten season at home Saturday against Munising. Hear both games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com
