VB Wins for Calumet, Houghton – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night…
– Calumet swept Hancock 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-20). Leah Bjorn led the Copper Kings with 16 kills. Amber Johnson had 14 digs.
– Houghton blanked West Iron County 3-0.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City v Bessemer – canceled because of weather.
– Ewen-Trout Creek v Chassell – canceled because of weather.
– Baraga v Ontonagon – no report.

Several Ontonagon football players have been honored by the Western Eight Conference. Tanner Balcomb, Jaden Weisinger and Micah Blake were placed on the All-Conference team. Cree Korcich and Henry Menigoz received Honorable Mention votes.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines Senior “A” Hockey Club has opened training camp, and is looking for players. Practices will take place each Monday and Wednesday through November 13th. Wednesday sessions will be at 9:45 pm. Monday sessions will vary – you’ll find the times on the Wolverines’ Facebook page. There is a $50.00 training camp fee that’s due before the second time a player skates. If you have questions, call coach Bruce “Cukie” Coppo at 369-1880.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost their fifth straight game last night, 1-0 to the Buffalo Sabres. Jimmy Howard stopped 31 shots, and took the tough loss in net. The Wings will skate at Tampa Bay tomorrow night. Pregame will begin at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight. Tip-off is at 7:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
Justin Turner’s two-run homer powered the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros in game one of the World Series last night. Game two will be played tonight in L-A. Justin Verlander will start for the Astros.

NFL
Detroit Lions punter Sam Martin will make his season debut Sunday. He’s returning from an ankle injury suffered over the summer. Punter Jeff Locke has been released.

Ski Swaps
There will be two ski swap sessions held in the area on Saturday.

The Copper Country Ski Tigers will hold a Nordic ski gear swap at the Houghton High School Multi-Purpose Room. Sellers pay just 15 percent commission per item for the convenience, with a maximum of $50.00 commission per item regardless of price. Drop off items to be sold on Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, or Saturday from 8:30 to
9:45. The sale runs from 10:00 until noon. Registration for the Ski Tigers is now open online. If you need assistance with registration or have question about Ski Tigers, help will be available during the gear swap.

The Mont Ripley Racing Team will hold its downhill and snowboard ski swap at Mont Ripley Saturday between 11:00 and 2:00. If you have equipment you would like to sell, bring it to Mont Ripley Friday afternoon between 4:30 and 7:30; or between 8:30 and 10:00 Saturday morning. A 20 percent commission will be collected to support the team.
