VB Wins for Calumet, Houghton – Friday Sports Wrap

In high school volleyball last night…
– Houghton blanked Hancock 3-0.
– Calumet shut out Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-14). Lea Bjorn had 15 kills and 13 digs for the Copper Kings. Amber Johnson had 20 digs. Maija Codere had seven kills for the Lakes, and Joslynn Perala recorded 18 digs.
– L’Anse v West Iron County – not reported.
– Ewen-Trout Creek v Wakefield-Marenisco – not reported.

Today…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell and Watersmeet play in a triangular at Dollar Bay.

In high school football tonight…
– Houghton plays at Hancock in the annual Copper Bowl game. Broadcast coverage will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Calumet entertains Mid-Peninsula Conference champion Gladstone. The Copper Kings need a win to guarantee a playoff berth.
– L’Anse visits WestPAC champion West Iron County. The Purple Hornets need a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.
– Ontonagon welcomes Carney Nadeau. The Gladiators could make the playoffs if they win tonight.

Tomorrow, Lake Linden-Hubbell entertains Manistique. The Lakes could still make the playoffs with a victory. Pregame coverage begins at 1:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The Upper Peninsula cross country finals will be run tomorrow at Munising.

In hockey, Team Copper Country competes at the Split Season League Playoffs at Jackson and Chelsea this weekend. They’ll open this evening at 5:30 against Lansing. Game two will be tomorrow morning, with a possible third game tomorrow evening. The championship match will be played Sunday morning.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team plays at Wisconsin-Platteville tomorrow at noon.

Both Finlandia soccer teams play at the Illinois Institute of Technology tomorrow.

It’s a big Homecoming weekend at Michigan Tech.

The Michigan Tech hockey team welcomes Alabama-Huntsville tonight and tomorrow night at 7:07.

The MTU volleyball team hosts Davenport University today at 4:00, and Purdue Northwest tomorrow at 4:00.

The Tech soccer team welcomes Grand Valley State today at 4:00.

The Huskies football team hosts Wayne State tomorrow afternoon at 1:00.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team takes on the University of Wisconsin at the Resch Center in Green Bay tonight and tomorrow night.

The NMU football team entertains Saginaw Valley State tomorrow afternoon.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings visit the Washington Capitals tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons play the Wizards at Washington tonight.

MLB
The Los Angeles Dodgers advanced to the World Series last night with an 11-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. L-A took the National League Championship Series three games to one.

The New York Yankees could wrap up the American League Championship Series with a win tonight at Houston. New York leads the set three games to two. Former Tiger Justin Verlander will start for the Astros.

Numerous media outlets are reporting that Ron Gardenhire will be the next manager of the Detroit Tigers. Gardenhire managed the Minnesota Twins for 13 seasons. He led them to the postseason six times, but also recorded four seasons with 90 losses or more. He was the bench coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks this season.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, Derek Carr’s two-yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree as time expired gave the Oakland Raiders a 31-30 victory over the Kansas City Chief.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers underwent surgery to repair his broken collarbone yesterday. Brett Hundley will start for the Pack in Sunday’s 1:00 game against the Saints. The Detroit Lions have the weekend off.
