VB Tourney Wins for Calumet, LL-H and DB-TC – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School
The high school volleyball tournament opened last night.
– In Class D at Dollar Bay, the Blue Bolts edged Ontonagon 3-2. Lake Linden-Hubbell got past Baraga 3-1. The Lakes and Blue Bolts will meet for the district title Thursday at 7:30 at Dollar Bay.
– In Class C at L’Anse, Calumet ousted the Purple Hornets 3-0 (25-9, 25-4, 25-4). Leah Bjorn had 20 kills for Calumet. Ava Anderson had 20 digs. The Copper Kings will host Houghton tomorrow at 7:00. Hancock and Chassell play in the other district semifinal tomorrow at 7:00 at Chassell.

MTU
The Michigan Tech soccer team opens the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament this afternoon at 3:00 at top-seeded Grand Valley State.

MTU setter Laura DeMarchi has been honored as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Volleyball Player of the Week. DeMarchi had 76 assists in the Huskies’ wins over Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State.

After two losses to Minnesota State last weekend, the Tech hockey team has fallen to 20th in this week’s USCHO.com national poll. The Huskies received honorable mention votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Arizona Coyotes tonight. Pregame will begin at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons play the Lakers in Los Angeles tonight.

MLB
The Houston Astros could claim their first World Series title ever tonight, with a victory over the Dodgers at Los Angeles. Houston leads the series three games to two. Former Detroit Tiger Justin Verlander will start for the Astros.

New Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire has reportedly tapped two of his former Minnesota Twins coaches to join him in the Motor City. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that current Minnesota bench coach Joe Vavra will take on a similar role in Detroit, replacing Gene Lamont. Former Twins’ pitching coach Rick Anderson will become the bullpen coach. The Tigers have not confirmed either report.

NFL
The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Denver Broncos 29-19 in last night’s NFL game. If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have selected at least 12 games correctly to be eligible to become our weekly winner.
