Anibal Sanchez turned in a strong start, as the Detroit Tigers blasted the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-2 yesterday. Sanchez gave up two runs on four hits over 5-2/3rds innings, and earned his second win of the season. Justin Upton hit a 451-foot home run, and Ian Kinsler also homered. Upton and J.D. Martinez each had four hits.
That interleague series between the Tigers and Pirates moves to Pittsburgh tonight. Shane Greene will pitch against Ryan Vogelsong.
Former Tigers’ radio broadcaster Paul Carey has died. Carey spent 19 years paired with Ernie Harwell in the broadcast booth. Carey got his start at radio station WCEN in Mount Pleasant, where he was part of the first-ever broadcast of a Central Michigan University football game. He later worked in Saginaw, and joined WJR in Detroit as a staff announcer in 1956. He retired from the Tigers broadcast team in 1991, and from WJR in 1992. Paul Carey was 88 years old, and had been in hospice care for several weeks.
The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and will continue their series at St. Louis tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Mike Leake.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons lost to the Miami Heat 99-93 last night. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Detroit with 17 points. The Pistons played without starting point guard Reggie Jackson, who has an abdominal muscle strain. The loss means that Detroit will finish eighth in the Eastern Conference, and will face top-seeded Cleveland in the opening round of the playoffs. The Pistons also close their regular season tonight at Cleveland.
After the game, coach Stan Van Gundy said he didn’t think Jackson’s abdominal strain would sideline him during the playoffs.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will open the NHL playoffs tonight at Tampa Bay against the Lightning. Jimmy Howard will start in goal for Detroit. Face-off will be at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
High School
In high school track today, L’Anse will be among the teams competing at the Division Two Invitational at the Superior Dome.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team split a doubleheader at Maranatha Baptist University yesterday. The Lions took the opener 4-1. Luke Paul threw a one-hitter, and struck out seven. The Sabercats won the nightcap 3-1.
Little League
Baraga County Little League will hold registration sessions tonight between 5:00 and 6:30 at the Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College in Baraga, and at L’Anse High School.
Keweenaw Little League will hold its final sign-up session Saturday morning at 9:30 at the Kings Corner entrance at the Calumet School. All players who wish to participate this season must be enrolled before player evaluations begin at 10:00. For details and the full evaluation schedule, visit their Facebook page.
