UP XC Titles for Jeffers, DB-TC Boys; Hancock, Chassell Girls – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

Four Copper Country schools claimed cross country titles at the U.P. championships at Gladstone Saturday.

In Division Two…
• Jeffers claimed the boys team title. Hancock finished seventh out of eight teams competing. Landon Larson of the Jets took first place individually, with Cameron Anderson third.
• Hancock took the girls crown, out of seven competing teams. Lola Korpi of Ishpeming won the individual title, with Ella Keranen and Rayna Towles of the Bulldogs second and third.

In Division Three…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City earned the boys title. Chassell placed fifth out of eight teams competing. Kalvin Kytta of the Panthers was first individually, Joshua Gaunt of the Blue Bolts placed fourth.
• Chassell earned a narrow victory over Newberry on the girls side. Lily Etalamaki paced the Panthers with a sixth-place finish. Taryn Maki of Dollar Bay-Tamarack City finished fifth individually.

Marquette swept the team titles in the Division One meet…
• The Houghton boys finished third, behind runner-up Sault Ste. Marie. Birk Seagren of the Gremlins finished 11th individually.
• The Houghton girls placed second, with Roman Peterlin and Tessa Rautiola finishing third and fourth individually.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team remains winless, after a 5-2 loss to Wisconsin Saturday night. Logan Pietila and Tyrone Bronte scored for the Huskies. Blake Bietila made 34 saves, as the Badgers outshot the Huskies 39-19.

The Northern Michigan hockey team fell 5-1 at 18th-ranked at Arizona State Saturday night.

College Football

The MTU football team lost 35-21 to ninth-ranked Ferris State Saturday. Quarterback Alex Fries passed for a career-best 306 yards, and one touchdown. He also ran for a score.

The NMU football squad was routed by second-ranked Grand Valley State 73-14.

College Volleyball

The Tech volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision at Wayne State Saturday. Lindy Oujiri had a career-best 21 kills. Meg Raabe added16 kills. Tess Hayes notched 50 assists.

The Northern volleyball team swept Saginaw Valley State 3-0 Saturday.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team visits Purdue Northwest today.

The Northern women’s team plays at Parkside today.

The Northern men’s team hosts Saint Cloud State in their regular-season finale this afternoon.

NHL

The Red Wings pounded the Senators 5-2 Saturday afternoon. Joe Veleno, scored twice for Detroit. Dylan Larkin had a goal and two assists, and Shayne Gostisbehere and David Perron also found the net. Ville Husso made 35 saves.

The Wings host the Flames today. Coverage will begin following Lions football on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

In the National League Championship Series, the Phillies pounded the Diamondbacks 6-1. Philadelphia takes a 3-2 series lead, and will host game six tomorrow.

In the American League Championship series, the Astros host the Rangers tonight. Houston leads that series 3-2.

NFL

The Lions visit the Ravens for a 1:00 game today on 99.3 The Lift. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs will return to the lineup for Detroit, but running back Davis Montgomery will miss the game because of the rib injury he suffered last week. Receiver Marvin Jones will not travel with the team because of a personal issue.

The Packers travel to Denver for a 4:25 contest today.

The Eagles host the Dolphins in tonight’s game on 99.3 The Lift.
