UP XC Crowns for Houghton, Hancock Girls; Jeffers, DB-TC Boys – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

At the U.P. Cross Country championships Saturday, at Gentz’s Homestead Golf Course in Marquette…
• The Houghton girls won the Division 1 crown. Gremlins runners took three of the top eight positions, with Ingrid Seagren finishing first overall. Calumet placed seventh, with Kiira Berg finishing seventh individually.
• The Houghton boys finished third in Division 1, behind Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie. Eric Weiss of the Gremlins placed second individually. Calumet finished 10th.
• Hancock won the Division 2 girls crown. Bulldogs runners claimed three of the top nine positions, with Sierrah Driscoll placing fourth.
• Jeffers easily took Division 2 boys honors, with Jets runners turning in four of the top five individual performances. Simone Barp took the top individual honor.
• The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City girls team earned a second place finish in Division 3, with Taryn Maki finishing fourth individually.
• The Blue Bolt boys won the Division 3 crown, paced by Nikolas Thomas’ second-place finish.

In high school volleyball Saturday…
• Calumet fell to Marquette 3-1.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team fell 38-10 to top-ranked Ferris State Saturday. Will Ark’s 31-yard pass to Darius Willis provided the Huskies’ only touchdown.

The Northern Michigan University football team lost 28-24 to eighth-ranked Grand Valley State Saturday.

The Finlandia University football team dropped a tough 19-14 decision at Crown College Saturday. Fernando Monroe passed for 180 yards, and ran for 82.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team had the weekend off.

The Northern hockey team fell to 19th-ranked Bemidji State 4-3 Saturday evening, as the Wildcats settled for a weekend split.

College Volleyball

The 20th-ranked Tech volleyball team won its 12th-straight match Saturday, sweeping Purdue Northwest 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-7). Morgan Radtke and Lindy Oujiri each had nine kills.

The Finlandia volleyball squad was supposed to play at the Mount Mary Fall Classic this weekend, but the Lions have canceled all the remaining games in their season. No explanation has been offered.

College Soccer

The Tech soccer team hosts ninth-ranked Ferris State today at noon.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team fell to Viterbo University 2-0 Saturday. The Lions will host Wisconsin-Platteville today at 2:30. Coverage of today’s game will begin at 2:10 on KBear 102.3.

NHL

Dylan Larkin gave the Detroit Red Wings an early lead, but the Montreal Canadiens scored six straight to earn a 6-1 victory Saturday night. Detroit visits the Chicago Blackhawks tonight. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost to the Chicago Bulls 97-82 Saturday night. Saddiq Bey scored 20 for Detroit. The Pistons visit the Atlanta Hawks tomorrow.

MLB

The Atlanta Braves advanced to the World Series by defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 Saturday night. Atlanta won the National League Championship Series 4-2. They’ll face the Houston Astros in the fall classic, beginning Tuesday night in Houston.

NFL

Today…
• The Green Bay Packers host the Washington Football Team for a 1:00 game.
• The Detroit Lions visit Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams for a 4:05 contest. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
• In tonight’s contest, the Indianapolis Colts visit the San Francisco 49ers. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
