High School
The Calumet High School volleyball team faces McBain in the state tournament quarterfinals tonight. The game will be played at 6:00 in Grayling – six hours from Calumet, and one hour from McBain. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
North Central swept the top honors, in the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Eight-Player All-U.P. voting. The unbeaten Jets were named Team of the Year. Luke Gorzinski was named Offensive Player of the Year, Wyatt Raab Defensive Player of the Year, and Leo Gorzinski Coach of the Year. The Jets will face Colon for the Division Two state championship Saturday.

The Finlandia University men’s basketball team fell behind early, and lost 82-65 at Marian University last night. Rae’quan Funches led the Lions with 17 points.
College Volleyball
Michigan Tech’s Carissa Beyer has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball North Division Player of the Week. Beyer tallied 37 digs, as the Huskies swept their weekend matches against Wayne State and Saginaw Valley State. Tech hosts Northwood tomorrow in the opening round of the GLIAC tournament.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3 last night. Goals by Dylan Larkin and Michael Rasmussen put Detroit up 2-0. After the Jackets tied the game, Lucas Raymond’s tally midway through the third period put Detroit back on top. Columbus then scored three times in the final five minutes to claim the win. Thomas Greiss made 33 saves, and took the loss in net.

Detroit placed defenseman Mitchell Stephens on injured reserve yesterday. He suffered a lower body injury in Saturday’s game against Montreal. Joe Veleno has been called up from Grand Rapid to fill in.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons also got off to a cold start, and lost 129-107 to the Sacramento Kings last night. Detroit trailed 31-12 at the end of the first quarter. Saddiq Bey scored 28, and Isaiah Steward grabbed 15 rebounds.

Last night, the San Francisco 49ers stunned the Los Angeles Rams 31-10.

There are multiple reports that the Detroit Tigers have reached an agreement with free agent starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez. Rodriguez went 13-8 with a 4.74 ERA for the Boston Red Sox last season. He’ll turn 29 shortly after opening day. The deal is said to be for five years, at $77 million.
Milwaukee Brewers catcher Manny Piña has signed a two-year contract with the Atlanta Braves.
Nordic Skiing
Registration for the Copper Country Ski Tigers is open for the upcoming season. The Ski Tigers has Nordic skiing opportunities for kids ages five through 18, ranging from beginners, to experienced skiers who just enjoy the sport, to those who want to be involved in serious competition.
