MLB

The Tigers outlasted the Rockies 14-9 yesterday. Javier Báez and Jake Marisnick each hit grand slams for Detroit. Kerry Carpenter, Jake Rogers and Spencer Torkelson also went deep. Matt Manning gave up four runs over five innings, and got the win. Colorado scored five more off the bullpen, but Jason Foley closed the door in the ninth.

The Tigers have today off, and host the Athletics tomorrow. Tarik Skubal will return from the injured list to start against J.P. Sears. Skubal has missed the last 11 months, after suffering an arm injury last August. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers overcame an early deficit, and downed the Pirates 6-3 yesterday. Colin Rae gave up a two-run homer in the bottom of second inning, but settled down and allowed no more scoring before leaving in the seventh. William Contreras’ three-run shot in the top of the third quickly erased the deficit, and the Crew added three late runs to seal the win.

The Brewers host the Cubs this afternoon. Julio Teheran will pitch against Drew Smyly.

Both the Tigers and Brewers will be thinly represented on this year’s All Star teams. Neither team landed a player in the starting lineup. The pitchers and reserves were announced yesterday. Detroit starter Michael Lorenzen will make his first appearance. Milwaukee reliever Devin Williams will make his second.

Slow Pitch Softball

There are no Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League games tonight, because of the holiday.

Horseshoes

The Copper Country Horseshoe League is taking the holiday week off.

Basketball

The Pistons have signed their top pick in the recent NBA draft to a contract. Ausar Thompson was the fifth overall selection. The deal is believed to be worth $36 million over four years. Detroit also inked two-way deals with Jared Rhoden, who was in the Pistons system last season, and Malcolm Cazalon, a French player who has played the past three seasons in Serbia.

The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City School is hosting girls and boys alumni basketball games today. Current team members compete against former Blue Bolts players. Former coach Mike Mukavetz will coach the women’s alumni squad, and former coach Jack Powell will lead the men’s alumni team. The women’s game tips off at noon, with the men’s contest at 2:00. There will also be dunk and three-point shooting contests. Admission is by donation. Concessions will be available.

Hockey

After inking six free agents on Saturday, the Red Wings added former Coyotes forward Christian Fischer yesterday, on a one-year, $1.1 million deal. Former Detroit goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic has signed a free agent contract with the Penguins. Former Red Wing Tyler Bertuzzi has agreed to a one-year deal with the Maple Leafs.

The Copper Country Old Timers Hockey League has awarded this year’s “Hockey is LIfe” scholarships. Dominick Pizzi and Paul Olson, both of Hancock, each received $1000 to help cover higher education costs. Olson will be attending Gogebic Community College. Pizzi will be attending flight school in pursuit of his pilot license.

Money for the scholarships comes from the annual Old-Timers Hockey Tournament. Applicants are required to write an essay about how hockey has helped them prepare for the future. Applications for next year’s scholarships are available through local high school counselors.
