MLB – Tigers Return Tonight
The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and open a home set against the division-leading Royals tonight. Justin Verlander will pitch against Danny Duffy. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Two former Tigers made big contributions to their new teams last night. David Price struck out 11 as the Blue Jays defeated the Twins 5-1. Yoenis Cespedes hit three doubles and drove in four runs, as the Mets clubbed the Marlins 12-1.

Toledo Mud Hens third-baseman Mike Hessman homered in last night’s loss to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. It was his 433rd minor league home run – the most by any player in history.

Yangervis Solarte hit two home runs, as the San Diego Padres whalloped the Milwaukee Brewers 13-5 last night. Wily Peralta gave up six runs before being chased in the fourth inning. He took the loss. Newly-acquired reliever Preston Guilmet was torched for six runs in the seventh inning.

The Brewers continue that home series against the Padres tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Andrew Cashner.

Twilight League Playoffs Open Tonight
Twilight LeagueThe Copper Country Twilight League tournament opens tonight with the first game of the best-of-three semifinal series.
– At the Wolverine field, top seeded Wolverine-Orbit will host the fourth seeded Stanton Wildcats.
– At the Dollar Bay field, second seeded Dean Kangas-State Farm will entertain third seeded Pat’s Foods-Mosquito Inn.

Game two of each of those series will be played Thursday evening, with the third games to be played Saturday or Sunday, if needed. The winners will meet in the finals next week.

In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last night…
– L and L stopped Ahmeek Fire Department 8-1.
– Drift Inn defeated North End Two 6-3.
– Fat Lil Bandits stopped  Gasoline Alley 6-3.
– North End One Edged  Dreamland 5-4.
– Loading Zone got past Calumet Two 5-4.
– Out of the Norm Tattoo upended Calumet One 5-4.
Calumet One remains in first place, but only by the narrowest of margins over L and L.

Finlandia Men’s Soccer Adds Six
Finlandia Lions New LogoSix more athletes have confirmed that they will be attending Finlandia University to play men’s soccer this fall. – Ricardo Almanza, a goaltender from Forth Worth, Texas;
– Jonathan Barnes, the MVP from last year’s team at West Orange High School in Winter Green, Florida;
– Zdravko Martarano, who was ranked in the top-25 nationally while playing for the U-19 Chicago Sockers last season;
– Edward Caballero, who played for the Chivas Florida Academy team that was ranked third in the nation;
– Jeff St. Val, from Palm Coast, Florida.

Lions Great Farr Passes
Former Detroit Lions running back Mel Farr has died. Farr was the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1967. He played seven seasons in Detroit, and was named to two Pro Bowls. He went on to become a high-profile automobile dealer. Mel Farr was 70.
