MLB
Miguel Cabrera powered the Detroit Tigers to a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies last night. Cabrera blasted two home runs, each of which tied the game. In the bottom of the seventh, he doubled, and scored the winning run on a single by Victor Martinez. J.D. Martinez and Nick Castellanos also also homered. Mike Pelfrey gave up four runs on 11 hits over six innings. Justin Wilson earned the win in relief, and Francisco Rodriguez collected his 13th save.
The Tigers have won seven of their last eight games, and host the Phillies again tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Jeremy Hellickson. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Justin Upton missed last night’s game after feeling tightness in his right quad. He’s considered day-to-day. Pitcher Jordan Zimmermann has been diagnosed with a minor groin strain. The injury forced him out of Sunday’s game. Manager Brad Ausmus says Zimmermann will miss his next start, but can probably avoid the disabled list.
Miguel Cabrera and Cameron Maybin have been named American League Co-Players of the Week. Maybin hit .600 in his first week back from a long stint on the disabled list. Cabrera hit .500 with three home runs.
The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and open a set at Atlanta tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Julio Teheran.
Twilight League
The Copper Country Twilight League opens its schedule tonight…
– Wolverine-Orbit plays Dean Kangas-State Farm at the Dollar Bay field.
– Pat’s Food-Mosquito Inn faces Stanton-Superior National Bank at the Stanton field.
A new team called the Copper Country Miners will be added to the Twilight League this summer. It’s made up of local high school players, and will share the Wolverine field. Because of Michigan High School Athletics Association rules, the Miners will not be included in the Twilight League schedule until after the high school season is complete.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs, the Sharks defeated the Blues 6-3 last night, and now lead the Western Conference final three games to two. The Lightning could wrap up the Eastern Conference final with a win over the Penguins tonight. Tampa Bay leads that set three games to two.
NBA
In the NBA playoffs, the Raptors got past the Cavaliers 105-99 last night. Their Eastern Conference final is tied at two wins per team. The Thunder and the Warriors play tonight. Oklahoma City leads that Western Conference final two games to one.
