Trails Festival Concludes – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball…

  • Houghton competed Friday and Saturday at the Beast of the Northeast tournament in Wisconsin. On Friday, the Gremlins fell to Schofield DC Everest 2-0 (10-25, 17-25), Luxemburg-Casco 2-0 (14-25, 10-25), and Green Bay Southwest 2-0 (15-25, 16-25). On Saturday, they dropped a 3-2 (6-25, 25-22, 10-15) decision to Mosinee and a 2-0 (19-25, 13-25) match to Kingsford, then logged a 2-0 (28-26, 25-19) win over Randolph.

MLB

Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson homered, as the Tigers downed the Red Sox 4-1 yesterday. Brant Hurter replaced opener Beau Brieske in the second inning, gave up a run on five hits over five frames, and earned the win.

The Tigers visit the Padres tonight. Detroit has not named a starter. Joe Musgrove will open for San Diego. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy and pitcher Ricky Vanasco have been brought up from Toledo to fill the two extra roster positions the Tigers get in September.

The Brewers fell to the Reds 4-3 in 11 innings yesterday. Neither team scored after the fifth inning, until Santiago Espinal’s single off Bryse Wilson drove home Rece Hinds with the winning run. Willy Adames homered.

The Brewers host the Cardinals this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will start against Andre Pallante.

Milwaukee’s two September roster additions are pitcher DL Hall, who had been the 27th man for Friday’s doubleheader, and outfielder Brewer Hicklen, who hit 21 home runs and stole 42 bases this season at Nashville.

At the Copper Harbor Trails Festival Saturday…
 • Chad Cannon from Neenah, Wisconsin won the long mountain bike race, more than two minutes ahead of runner-up Hunter Bell from Brighton, Michigan. Marjorie Bemis from Indianapolis was the fastest woman.
 • Brandon Tobias from New Prague, Minnesota claimed the medium mountain bike event, with nearly a minute advantage over Bob Griswold from Kohler, Wisconsin. Megan Seiler from Muskego, Wisconsin was the fastest woman.
 • The short mountain bike race went to Will Thome of Saint Paul, Minnesota. Houghton’s Elizabeth Scott was the runner-up, and fastest woman.
 • Bodee McFadden from Duluth took the downhill crown, edging out Ryan Zinzow from Whitewater, Wisconsin.

Sunday…
 • Ryan Zinzow of Whitewater, Wisconsin won the Expert Enduro, with an 18-second margin over Bodee McFadden from Duluth. Lauren Maki of Marshfield, Wisconsin earned the women’s title, six seconds better than Leia Schneeberger of Madison.
 • Benjamin Frensko of Cologne, Minnesota took the Sport Enduro, with Houghton’s Casey Goethel six seconds off the pace. Kyia Anderson of Calumet claimed the women’s title, with Abby Savolt of Duluth in second place.
 • Joe Frensko of Cologne, Minnesota won the Beginner Enduro, with Leroy Kincannon of Ferndale, Michigan second. Harper Zinzow from Cambridge, Wisconsin took the women’s title, with Kate Kendall of Marquette second.
 • Colin Freed of Houghton won the 10k Trail Run, with 2:10 margin over runner-up Henry Campbell of Superior, Wisconsin. Kristan Monahan Smith of Houghton claimed the women’s title, with Julia Junkkala of Houghton as runner-up.
