Torkelson Ignites Tigers’ Comeback – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

The Hancock softball team will face Johannesburg-Lewiston in the state quarterfinals today at 5:00 at Sault Ste. Marie. The Bulldogs carry a record of 23-7 into the contest. The Cardinals’ record is 29-3-1. Tickets for the game must be purchased in advance online here.

NBA

The Nuggets won the Larry O’Brien Trophy for the first time last night, defeating the Heat 94-89 in game five of the NBA championship series. Nikola Jokic was named the series’ Most Valuable Player.

NHL

The Golden Knights host the Panthers in game five of the Stanley Cup championship series tonight. Vegas leads the series 3-1.

MLB

The Tigers snapped their nine-game losing streak with a dramatic 6-5 victory last night. Trailing by three in the bottom of the ninth, Spencer Torkelson blasted a two-run homer, and Zack Short singled home Nick Maton to force extra innings. Torkelson then drove home Andy Ibáñez with the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th.

The Tigers host the Braves again tonight. Reese Olson will start against Spencer Strider. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has brought Matt Vierling back from the injured list, where he’d been recuperating from back stiffness. Nick Solak was sent to Toledo to make room on the roster.

The Brewers had yesterday off, and visit the Twins tonight. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Pablo López.

Former Milwaukee first baseman Luke Voit has signed a minor league deal with the Mets.
