MLB
The Tigers took a four-run lead into the bottom of the ninth, then held on to edge the Twins 8-7 yesterday. Minnesota struck first, scoring four runs off Reese Olson, who didn’t make it out of the third inning. Detroit came back, powered by two Spencer Torkelson home runs, a long home run and a triple by Riley Greene, and a solo shot by Kerry Carpenter. A Greene sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth plated Akil Baddoo with what wound up being the winning run. Reliever Jason Foley gave up three runs on two homers in the bottom of the ninth, but finally got Donovan Solano to ground into a double play to end the game.
The Tigers open a series in Cleveland tonight. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Xzavion Curry. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
Wade Miley struggled, as the Brewers lost 7-1 to the Dodgers last night. Miley gave up four runs on seven hits over five innings. Milwaukee collected just three hits, including a Mark Canha home run.
That series in Los Angeles concludes tonight. Corbin Burnes will start against Lance Lynn.
The Reds and Cubs both won, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division shrinks to two-and-a-half games.
Twilight League
The Copper Country Twilight Baseball League playoffs begin tonight with a play-in game. Fourth-seed REL-Mohawk Technology meets fifth-seed Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker at the Wolverine field.
The Twilight League playoffs will conclude Sunday. We’ll broadcast the championship game at 3:00 on KBear 102.3.
NFL
The Lions’ receiving corps suffered two critical injuries yesterday. Amon-Ra St. Brown limped off the field after a defender fell on his leg during a scrimmage. Jameson Williams left the field after suffering a hamstring injury. We should learn more about their status today.
Former Lions head coach Buddy Parker has been picked as a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s class of 2024. Parker led Detroit to back-to-back NFL titles in the 1950s. He was a fullback on the Lions team that won the championship in 1935. Parker passed away in 1982 at the age of 68. He’ll need to get 80 percent of the votes from the full Hall of Fame panel in January.
