Toivola Wins in Extra Innings – Friday Sports Wrap

Morning Sports for Friday, June 20th:

MLB: Tigers Break Losing Streak
Detroit Tigers Circle LogoThe Tigers snapped their three-game losing streak 2-1 victory over the Royals yesterday afternoon. Anibal Sanchez gave up a run in the first inning… then shut down the Kansas City lineup through the seventh. Joe Nathan struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn his first save in three weeks. After the game, he said that he and the coaching staff had discovered and corrected a flaw in his delivery that they believe had led to his recent struggles. Detroit had only four hits in the game, but three came in the fourth inning… including an RBI double by Miguel Cabrera, and a solo home run by J.D. Martinez.

The Tigers open a series at Cleveland tonight. Rick Porcello will face Corey Kluber. Hear the first pitch at 7:05 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Milwaukee Brewers Circle LogoBrewers Stop D’Backs
Yovani Gallardo turned in seven strong innings, as the Brewers shut down the Diamondbacks 4-1 yesterday. Francisco Rodriguez earned his 23rd save.

The Brewers open a set at Colorado tonight. Marco Estrada will start against Christian Bergman.

Twilight League Baseball
In Copper Country Twilight League Baseball last night…
– At the Dollar Bay field, Wolverine-Orbit scored six runs in the third inning, and beat Blue Sky Health 12-7. Mike Saari had three hits and drove in three runs for Wolverine.
– At the Toivola field, Mosquito Inn came from behind to beat Pat’s Foods 7-6 in extra innings. Justin Kirby struck out 13 batters to earn a complete-game win. Nick Bolton homered for Toivola.

Gustavsson Stays with Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings have agreed to a contract extension with goalie Jonas Gustavsson. It’s a one-year deal that’s said to be worth 1.5-million dollars.

Packers Lose Franklin to Neck Injury
Packers’ running back Johnathan Franklin will not be returning to the team. Franklin showed promise as a rookie last season, before suffering a neck injury in November. That injury is apparently serious enough that doctors have told him not to continue his football career.

U-P All-Star Hoops Games Tomorrow
The Upper Peninsula Classic All-Star Basketball Games will be played in Saint Ignace tomorrow. The rosters are made up exclusively of players who graduated this spring. The North All-Star Girls’ roster includes Elisa Jurmu and Kelsie Richards from Houghton, Madi Swanson and Valerie Rajala from L’Anse, Julia Daavetilla from Dollar Bay, and Brooke Turin from Ontonagon. Ontonagon’s Dick Frantti will coach the team. The North All-Star Boys’ roster includes Alex Almquist from Hancock, Trent Keteri from Houghton, Paul Torola from Calumet, and Jimmy Veker from L’Anse.

Western Wild Fundraiser
The Western Wild girls’ travel basketball team will be traveling to the national tournament in Gainesville, Florida next week. The Wild is currently ranked number-one in the state, and number-eight in the nation, and is composed of girls from the western Upper Peninsula. They will be raising money by pumping gas for tips and selling baked goods at the Pines gas station in Baraga from 5:00 until 8:00 this evening. Donations to support the team may also be dropped off at Gemignani’s restaurant in Hancock.
