MLB

The Tigers’ five-game win streak ended yesterday with a 12-6 loss to the Cardinals. After falling behind early, Detroit took a brief lead with Jake Rogers’ grand slam in the top of the sixth. The advantage evaporated quickly, as Saint Louis scored seven runs in the bottom of the inning off Tyler Alexander and Mason Englert. Spencer Torkelson also homered for Detroit. Paul Goldschmidt hit three home runs for the Cardinals.

The Tigers open a series at Cleveland at St. Louis tonight. Joey Wentz will start against Tanner Bibee. Coverage will begin at 5:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has sent starter Spencer Turnbull down to Toledo. Turnbull has struggled to regain his form following Tommy John ligament replacement surgery. Team officials hope he can work things out with the Mud Hens. Alex Faedo will join the Tigers’ rotation.

The Brewers broke their six-game losing streak with a 7-3 victory over the Giants yesterday. William Contreras and Willy Adames homered.

The Brewers host the Dodgers tonight. Freddy Peralta will start against Tony Gonsolin. 

Michigan Sports Hall of Fame

Two athletes with Upper Peninsula connections are included on this year’s Michigan Sports Hall of Fame ballot. In the Professional Division, hockey goaltender Tony Esposito is a nominee. The native of Sault Ste. Maris, Ontario, was a standout at Michigan Tech in the mid-60s, before going on to a stellar NHL career. In the Amateur Division, baseball pitcher Kevin Tapani grew up in Escanaba and starred at Central Michigan University. He played for five major league teams over a 13-year career.
