MLB – Tigers
The Detroit Tigers opened a 7-0 lead, then held on to take a 9-8 victory over the Baltimore Orioles last night. Alfredo Simon worked 5-2/3rds innings, and gave up just two hits – a pair of two-run homers. Yoenis Cespedes homered for Detroit

The Tigers continue that series at Baltimore tonight. Buck Farmer will start against Wei-Yin Chen. Hear the first pitch at 7:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Yesterday, the Tigers began their promised “reboot,” trading starting pitcher David Price to the Toronto Blue Jays. In exchange, they get three left-handed starters. Daniel Norris was named as Baseball America’s 18th best prospect, despite his 3-10 record at Triple-A Buffalo. He’s 1-1 in five starts with Toronto, and is expected to start for Detroit on Sunday. Matt Boyd started the season at double-A, and was promoted to Buffalo a few weeks ago. Jairo Labourt is pitching in Single-A. He was Toronto’s only representative in this year’s All-Star Futures Game.

To make room for both Norris and Boyd on the 40-man roster, the Tigers moved pitcher Kyle Lobstein to the 60-day disabled list. That doesn’t mean Lobstein is done for the summer – in fact, club officials say he may be ready to begin a rehab assignment early next week. He’s been sidelined since late May with a sore shoulder.

Detroit then sent closer Joakim Soria to the Pittsburgh Pirates, in exchange for minor league shortstop prospect JaCoby Jones. He’ll be assigned to the Tigers’ Double-A affiliate at Erie.

The Chicago Cubs scored five runs in the final two innings, and beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 last night. The late loss spoiled a good start by Jimmy Nelson, who gave up just two hits over seven innings. Will Smith took the loss, after giving up a three-run homer to Anthony Rizzo in the eighth.

The Brewers continue that home set against the Cubs tonight. Taylor Jungmann will pitch against Jason Hammel.

In return, Milwaukee gets four of Houston’s top-30 prospects – outfielders Brett Phillips and Domingo Santana, right-hander Adrian Houser and left-hander Josh Hader. Santana has been assigned to Triple-A Colorado Springs. The other three will play at Double-A Biloxi.

The non-waiver trade deadline is 4:00 this afternoon.
