Tigers Clinch AL Central Title
The Tigers’ season came down to one final game yesterday. Heading into their game with the Twins, they led the Royals by one game in the American League Central Division. David Price pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning, and Detroit clinched the division title with a 3-0 victory. Joba Chamberlain got the final two outs of the eighth, and Joe Nathan pitched a perfect ninth to complete the shutout. Ian Kinsler was the offensive hero. He hit a solo homer in the third inning… then came to bat in the eighth with Andrew Romine on second base… DICKERSON A. Torii Hunter’s sacrifice fly drove in an additional insurance run. In the ninth, it came down to a final pitch from Nathan to Oswaldo Arcia… DICKERSON B. The Tigers will open the post-season Thursday against the Orioles in Baltimore. We’ll broadcast all their playoff games on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.
Brewers End Season with Loss
The Brewers gave up two runs in the first inning, and ended their season with a 5-2 loss to the Cubs. Mike Fiers took the loss, allowing four runs over six innings. Milwaukee spent 150 days in first place in the National League Central Division, but a late collapse dropped them all the way to third place – eight games behind the champion Cardinals. Team owner Mark Attanasio has already said that general Manager Doug Melvin will be back next season. The fate of manager Ron Roenicke and his coaching staff will be decided in the next few days.
Lions, Packers Win
The Lions took an early lead, and then held off the Jets for a 24-17 victory yesterday. Matthew Stafford threw for 293 yards and two touchdowns, with no interceptions. New kicker Alex Henery contributed a 51-yard field goal. The Lions will host the Bills Sunday afternoon.
Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdown passes, as the Packers ripped the Bears 38-17. Rodgers completed 22 of 28 passes for 302 yards, with no interceptions. The Green Bay defense held Chicago scoreless in the second half. The Packers will entertain the Vikings Thursday night.

Red Wings Continue Preseason Tonight
The Detroit Red Wings host the Maple Leafs in NHL preseason play tonight. We will cover the Red Wings again this season on FM 99.3 and AM 1400 WCCY.
Mead’s Field Goal Wins Miner’s Cup
In college football, Garrett Mead’s 39-yard field goal as time expired gave Michigan Tech a 34-31 win at Northern Michigan Saturday night. Tech led 21-7 at halftime, but the Wildcats came back to tie the game twice. Tech quarterback Tyler Scarlett eventually led a nine-play drive that set up the winning kick. It’s the second time this year Mead has kicked a game-winner at the buzzer… MEAD. It’s the 10th time the Huskies have won the Miner’s Cup since the stylish trophy was introduced 13 years ago.
The MTU volleyball team fell to Findlay 3-2 Friday night. The Huskies rebounded to take a 3-1 win over Hillsdale Saturday afternoon. Coach Matt Jennings was pleased with his team’s bounce-back… JENNINGS.
The Tech soccer team gave up an early goal to Ashland yesterday… then scored twice in the second period to take a 2-1 victory. Jackie Mielke’s unassisted goal tied the game, and Haley Crites’ goal off Mielke’s feed less than three minutes later was the game-winner.
The MTU doubles team of Kwang Suthijindawong and Sandra Cvetanovic won the USTA/ITA Midwest Region Doubles Championship yesterday with an 8-6 victory over Yahsha Moore and Anne Li Briand from Wayne State. The two will compete at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships beginning October 9th in Sumter, South Carolina. Suthijindawong also made the final in singles, where she lost her first match of the season to Stephanie Hirsch of Indianapolis.
Finlandia Volleyball 3-2 at Lions’ Invitational
The Finlandia University volleyball team won all three of its matches on the first day of its own invitational on Friday. The Lions opened with a 3-1 victory over Mount Mary University, They followed with a 3-0 victory over Wisconsin-Marinette, and closed the day with a 3-1 victory over Grace Bible College. Things did not go so well on Saturday, as the Lions lost to Alverno College and Maranatha Baptist Bible University by identical 3-0 scores.
The Finlandia women’s soccer team shut out Mount Mary University 5-0 Saturday morning. Five different Lions scored, as Finlandia outshot the Blue Angels 26-3.
The men’s team lost 6-0 at Wisconsin-Platteville yesterday afternoon. The Lions were outshot 38-0.
Gremlin Football Falls at West Iron
In high school football on Saturday, Houghton fell at West Iron County 34-20. Ben Collaer ran four yards for a touchdown, and connected with Sam Bethancourt on an 89-yard pass and run for the other.
On Friday night…
– Calumet rolled up a 32-0 halftime lead, and cruised to a 38-12 homecoming victory over Hancock. Robert Erkkila ran for three touchdowns, and Kaden Kangas rushed for two.
– In the final football Battle of the Bay for the foreseeable future, L’Anse romped to a 47-6 victory over Baraga. Brandon Kemppainen rushed for 200 yards and four touchdowns. Baraga will drop back to eight-man play next fall.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Maple City-Glen Lake 38-19 in a game played at the Superior Dome. The Lakes are two wins shy of a guaranteed playoff berth.
– Ewen-Trout Creek crushed Brimley 62-14.
– Ontonagon had the weekend off.
At the Marquette Volleyball Invitational on Saturday, Hancock defeated Menominee 2-0 in the semifinal, then lost to Marquette 2-1 in the final.
