MLB – Tigers Hold Off Jays
The Detroit Tigers took an 8-0 lead over the Toronto Blue Jays last night, then held on to win the game 8-6. Anibal Sanchez carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning. That’s when the Toronto bats woke up. He gave up three hits, as the Jays scored their first run. Alex Wilson relieved him, and surrendered a two-run single, and a three-run double. Bruce Rondon threw a wild pitch and walked a batter before finally ending the inning with a fly ball to left field. Sanchez was charged with four of those runs. The Tigers had taken command earlier, scoring five runs in the fourth inning. Nick Castellanos and Anthony Gose each contributed two-run singles.
The Tigers continue that home set against the Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon. David Price will pitch against R.A. Dickey. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
That five-run fourth inning in last night’s game may prove to be very costly. Miguel Cabrera led off the inning with a single, but pulled up lame a moment later as he left first base on a hit-and-run play. The tentative diagnosis is a left calf strain. He’ll undergo an MRI today.
Alex Avila returned from the disabled list, and started last night’s game at catcher. Bryan Holaday was sent down to Toledo to make room on the roster.
The Tigers have shaken up their bullpen. Yesterday, they designated veteran relievers Joba Chamberlain and Tom Gorzelanny for assignment. They’ll be replaced with two rookies who were converted from starters to relievers just this season. Jeff Ferrell saved 12 games for Double-A Erie, and one during a brief stay with Triple-A Toledo. Drew VerHagen spent a brief time with Detroit last season as a spot starter.
The resurgent Milwaukee Brewers blasted the Cincinnati Reds 12-1 last night. The big blow was Carlos Gomez’ grand slam home run in the seventh inning. Mike Fiers turned in seven shutout innings to earn the win.
The Brewers have won six in a row, and continue that set against the Reds at Cincinnati tonight. Jimmy Nelson will start against Josh Smith.
Before the game, the Brewers optioned right-hander Corey Knebel and utility man Jason Rogers to Triple-A Colorado Springs. They brought up right-handers Tyler Cravy and David Goforth.
Red Wings Sign Saarijärvi
The Detroit Red Wings have signed Finnish defenseman Vili Saarijärvi. Saarijärvi was their third-round pick in the recent draft. He’s from the northern Finnish town of Rovaniemi, and will likely begin his pro career with the Flint Firebirds of the Ontario Hockey League.
Frisbee Tournament Opens Today
The 58th annual Coca Cola International Frisbee Tournament begins this morning at Agassiz Field in Calumet, and continues through Sunday afternoon. The defending champion Boomtown Saints lead the field – they’ve won two straight titles, and five times overall. Last year’s runners-up, the Appleton Assassins, will also be back. Several local teams will be competing. On Sunday at noon, there’ll be a women’s exhibition game – the first such match at the IFT in 31 years. You’re invited to visit Agassiz Field and enjoy the action.
Tonight, two Guts legends will be inducted into the International Frisbee and USA Guts Hall of Fame. Kristin Hamill was a member of the Detroit Dolls when they won four consecutive GPA World Championships. Steve Trauger is a long-time Guts player and historian, and also promotes Frisbee golf.
