MLB
The Tigers grabbed an early lead, then held off the Guardians 4-3 last night. Kerry Carpenter’s two-run homer powered a three-run first inning. A Harold Castro RBI double in the third inning gave Detroit all the runs they needed. Garrett Hill gave up a run on four hits over six innings, and earned the win. Thigs got testy in the ninth inning, when Cleveland’s Tyler Freeman led off with a double off Gregory Soto. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. With two strikes, Myles Straw hit a foul tip. The ruling on the field was that it was a foul ball. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch appealed, and a video replay showed that catcher Tucker Barnhardt had caught the tip for the third strike. Both Straw and Cleveland manager Terry Francona were ejected while arguing the decision. Soto then got a groundout from Steven Kwan to end the game.
It’s the first time in more than five weeks the Tigers have won back-to-back games.
The Tigers visit the Guardians again tonight. Daniel Norris will start against Cal Quantrill. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
Victor Caratini’s two-run single in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted the Brewers to a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers last evening. The timely fly ball to right field made a winner out of Brent Suter, who had given up a run in the top of the inning. Willy Adames and Christian Yelich homered for the Crew.
The Brewers host the Dodgers tonight. Eric Lauer will pitch against Tony Gonsolin.
