MLB

The Tigers lost to the Pirates 4-1 last night. Matt Manning gave up four runs over six innings, and took the loss. Detroit’s only run came in the seventh, on an RBI single by Akil Baddoo.

That quick series will wrap up in Pittsburgh this afternoon. Eduardo Rodriguez will pitch against Osvaldo Bido. Coverage will begin at 12:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

Rodriguez is still a Tiger, after he vetoed a potential deadline trade to the Dodgers yesterday. L-A first went after former Tiger Justin Verlander, but the Mets wound up trading him back to the Astros. The Dodgers then worked out a deal with Detroit for Rodriguez, but he invoked the no-trade clause in his contract. Reports are that he did not want to go to the West Coast, which would take him farther away from his family in Florida. Rodriguez has three years remaining on his current contract with the Tigers, but can opt out at the end of this season and become a free agent.

The Tigers did trade starter Michael Lorenzen, who will continue his season with the Phillies. In exchange, Detroit gets infielder Hao-Yu Lee, a 20-year-old native of Taiwan. Lee was ranked as Philadelphia’s fifth-best minor league prospect, and was hitting .283 at their high-A Jersey Shore farm team.

The Brewers snapped their four-game losing streak last night, with a 6-4 victory over the Nationals. Washington scored three in the second off Freddy Peralta, but Peralta regrouped, turned in six innings, and earned the win. The Crew surged ahead with four runs in the fourth, on two-run singles by Brice Turang and Joey Weimer.

That series concludes in Washington this afternoon. Wade Miley will return from the injured list to start against MacKenzie Gore.

One minute before the trading deadline yesterday, Milwaukee sent Luis Urías to the Red Sox. Urías had been the Brewers’ starting third baseman on opening day, but struggled to return from a hamstring strain, and was demoted to the minors. Boston has assigned him to their AAA Worcester team. In exchange, Milwaukee gets minor-league pitcher Bradley Blalock, who recently came back from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery, and was on the roster of their high-A minor league team.

Milwaukee also picked up former Tigers reliever Andrew Chafin in a deal with the Diamondbacks. It’s a straight-up trade for reliever Peter Strzelecki.

Twilight League

In Copper Country Twilight Baseball League play last night…
• Garnet Garage blanked Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker 3-0.
• Houghton Building Supply-Stanton shaded Northern Driveline 7-6.

NFL

The Lions waived tight end Shane Zylstra yesterday, just a day after he suffered a season-ending knee injury in practice. If Zylstra clears waivers, he can remain with the Lions on injured reserve. Rookie tight end Sam LaPorta also suffered an injury Monday. With help needed, Detroit has reportedly signed Daniel Helm, who recently played with the USFL Memphis Showboats.
