MLB

Riley Greene drove in two runs, as the Tigers downed the Twins 5-3 last night. Matt Manning allowed all three Minnesota runs over five innings, in his first start since mid-April. Four Detroit relievers gave up just two hits over the final four innings.

The Tigers visit the Twins again this afternoon. Tyler Alexander will start against Joe Ryan. Coverage begins at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Before last night’s game, the Tigers traded pitcher Michael Fulmer to the Twins. Fulmer walked from one clubhouse to the other. Minnesota used seven pitchers in the game, but did not call on Fulmer. In exchange, Detroit gets 24-year-old starter Sawyer Gipson-Long, who will report to their Double-A Erie farm team. Fulmer will become a free agent at the end of the season.

The Brewers fell to the Pirates 5-3 last night. The Crew broke a scoreless tie with solo homers by Willy Adames, Rowdy Tellez and Kolton Wong in the top of the sixth. Pittsburgh responded with five runs off Corbin Burnes and Brad Boxberger in the bottom of the sixth.

The Brewers play in Pittsburgh again tonight. Freddy Peralta will return from the injured list to start against Tyler Beede.

Milwaukee snuck in one final trade before yesterday’s deadline, bringing in reliever Trevor Rosenthal from the Giants. Rosenthal hasn’t pitched since 2020 because of a string of injuries, but is anticipated to be ready by the end of the month. The Brewers gave up minor league outfielder Tristan Peters.

GLIAC

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is expanding.

Roosevelt College in downtown Chicago has been added as a provisional member. Roosevelt currently competes in the NAIA, but has applied for membership in NCAA Division II. If all goes smoothly, they would begin competition in the 2024-2025 season.

They would also become the third team in the league to be known as the Lakers, joining Lake Superior State and Grand Valley State.
