MLB

With snowflakes in the air, temperatures around 40, and very few fans in the stands, the Tigers swept their doubleheader with the Guardians yesterday.

Kerry Carpenter’s solo home run in the bottom of the ninth brought Detroit a 4-3 comeback victory in the opener. The Tigers trailed after Cleveland scored three runs off Matthew Boyd in the fourth inning. Detroit tied the game in the fifth, with an RBI single by Javier Báez, and a double by Carpenter. Alex Lange got the win in relief.

Riley Greene’s homer in the sixth inning of the nightcap provided the only run in Detroit’s 1-0 win. Eduardo Rodriguez struck out 10 over eight strong innings, giving up just four hits.

The Tigers have won five straight, and host the Guardians again this afternoon. Spencer Turnbull will start against Cal Quantrill. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers edged the Mariners 6-5 in 11 innings last night. Christian Yelich and Willy Adames homered, as the teams played to a 4-4 tie through nine frames. Garrett Mitchell scored on a Brice Turang double play in the top of the 10th, but former Brewer Kolten Wong came home on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning. In the top of the 11th, Willy Adames’ groundout drove home Joey Weimer. Seattle loaded the bases against Bryse Wilson in the bottom of the 11th, but Julio Rodríguez grounded out to end the game.

The Brewers visit the Mariners again this afternoon. Eric Lauer will start against Marco Gonzales.
