Tigers Take Two from Twins – Sunday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Detroit Tigers swept their doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins yesterday, taking the opening game 8-2, and the nightcap 4-2. Matthew Boyd put his struggles behind him in the first contest, giving up two runs on just four hits over six innings. Tigers batters scratched out 16 hits in the seven-inning game, including 13 singles.

Tarik Skubal earned his first major league win in the second game, allowing two runs on three hits over five frames. Jeimer Candelario homered with a man on in the third inning. Miguel Cabrera’s two-run shot in the fifth was the game-winner. That homer moved him into 50th place on the all-time major league career list, ahead of Tigers Hall-of-Famer Charlie Gehringer.

That series wraps up in Detroit today. Casey Mize will start against Kenta Maeda. Coverage begins at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Eric Sogard’s two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates last night. Down 4-2 late in the contest, the Crew narrowed the gap with a solo Orlando Arcia homer in the bottom of the seventh, then took the lead with a two-run Avisail Garcia double in the eighth. Pittsburgh reclaimed the advantage in the top of the ninth, as a wild Josh Hader walked home two runs, but Sogard’s shot with Jace Peterson on base won the game for the Brewers. Christian Yelich hit a long home run in the first inning.

The Brewers host the Pirates again this afternoon. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Steven Brault. After the game, he will head home to be with his wife, who is scheduled to deliver their first child on Tuesday.
