Tigers Take Two at Cleveland – Thursday Sports Wrap

Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League play last night…
• A and S Industrial/Loukus Tech downed Pat’s Foods/Buckos 26-5, then beat Paul Hyrkas Construction 23-9.
• McGann’s/Northern Auto shut down Downtowner Two 31-1, then defeated Sayen’s Auto/Coca Cola 22-13.

Fast Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League play last evening…
• Crush/Baby E’s/Diamond House and Superior National Bank played to an 8-8 tie. Vera Peterson and Delaney Heinonen pitched for Superior National Bank. SNB’s Sylvia L’Esperance was the big hitter for the evening with two doubles and a single. Janie Berg and Trisha Wesa each had a double and Hannah Impola, Maddie Johnson and Nikki Koski each had a single. At the plate for Crush, Laura Lyons, Kierstyn Codere, Kara Kinnunen and Becca Lyons each had a single.
• JB’s downed Superior Service 4-1. MacKenzie Ekdahl was the winning pitcher. Brynn Arko and Katy Fay each had two singles for JB’s. Ekdahl also had a single. For Superior Service, Raegan Moyle had two singles, Milly Loukus had a double, and Rali Therrian had a single.

Twilight League Baseball

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball tonight…
• At the Hancock Driving Park, Northern Driveline plays REL-Mohawk Technology.

High School

Former Hancock High School hockey standout Austin Salani has signed a tender from the Austin Bruins of the North American Hockey League. The commitment locks him in with the Bruins next season, and removes him from the upcoming NAHL draft. In four years with the Bulldogs, Salani scored 80 goals and added 100 assists in 91 games played.

NBA

In NBA tournament play last night, the Suns defeated the Clippers 130-103. Phoenix wins the Western Conference championship 4-2.

Tonight, the Bucks host the Hawks. The Eastern Conference championship series is tied 2-2. An examination showed that Milwaukee star Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered no structural damage to his left knee during the fall that forced him out of Tuesday’s game. He’s listed as doubtful for tonight’s contest.

NHL

In the Stanley Cup championship series last night, the Lightning defeated the Canadiens 3-1. Tampa Bay leads the series 2-0, with game three set for tomorrow in Montreal.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers swept their doubleheader against the Cleveland Indians yesterday, taking the opener 9-4, then claiming the nightcap 7-1. José Ureña continued to struggle in the first game, serving up four solo home runs runs before leaving in the fourth inning. The Tigers offense pounded out 15 hits, with three each for Akil Baddoo and Harold Castro. Kyle Funkhauser got the win in relief. In the second contest, Wily Peralta gave up a run on three hits over five innings. Miguel Cabrera and Eric Haase homered. It was the first doubleheader sweep for the Tigers in Cleveland since September, 1977.

The Tigers have today off, and begin a home set against the Chicago White Sox tomorrow. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

After the game, the Tigers sent reliever Miguel del Pozo down to Toledo. Outfielder Derek Hill, who had been called up as the extra player for the doubleheader, was also returned to the Mud Hens.

Detroit prospects Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene have been named to the roster for the all–star futures game, which will be played July 11th.

The Milwaukee Brewers gave up seven runs in the first inning, then roared back to defeat the Chicago Cubs 15-7 yesterday afternoon. Aaron Ashby’s major league debut could hardly have gone worse. He recorded just two outs in the top of the first inning, gave up four hits, walked three, and was charged with all seven runs. Milwaukee responded with a run in the bottom of the first, added five in the second, and took command with eight runs in the fourth. Luis Urías had four hits, including two home runs. Willy Adames hit a grand slam.

The Brewers open a series at Pittsburgh tonight. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Wil Crowe.

To make room for Ashby on the active roster, utility man Pablo Reyes was was sent down to Nashville. To open a space on the 40-man roster, pitcher Bobby Wahl was designated for assignment. He was immediately claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
