Tigers Sweep Sox, Return to .500 – Tuesday Sports Wrap

The Houghton soccer team v Iron Mountain last evening – no report.

The Tigers scored five runs in the seventh inning, and claimed a 6-3 comeback victory over the White Sox last night. Parker Meadows and Spencer Torkelson homered. Ty Madden had a strong major league debut, giving up two runs over five innings. Tyler Holton earned the win in relief.

The victory boosted the Tigers’ record to .500 for the first time since early June.

After sweeping the four-game series, the Tigers return home to host the Angels this evening. Brant Hurter will start against Johnny Cueto. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Javier Báez’s season is over. The Tigers shortstop will undergo hip surgery next week to correct an issue that had been troubling him all season.

Along with adding Madden to the roster yesterday, Detroit also called pitcher Mason Englert back up from Toledo. Pitcher Bryan Sammons was sent down, and Will Vest was placed on paternity leave. 

After missing two months with a hamstring strain, Casey Mize is on track to return to the team, and could start Friday’s game against the Red Sox. 

Former Tigers infielder Don Wert has died. Wert was the starting third baseman on the 1968 world championship team, and was considered one of the best fielders of his generation. Don Wert was 86.

The Brewers had yesterday off, and host the Giants tonight. Tobias Myers will start against Logan Webb.
