Tigers Sweep Mariners with Walk-Off – Friday Sports Wrap

MLB
The Detroit Tigers completed a four-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners with a 5-4, 10-inning victory yesterday. Detroit took an early lead, scoring two on a pair of doubles by Justin Upton and Steven Moya in the second inning, and two more on a James McCann homer in the fourth. Daniel Norris pitched three shutout innings in his first start of the season, but gave up a solo home run in the fourth inning, and two more in the fifth. A Nelson Cruz homer off Bruce Rondon tied the game in the top of the sixth. There was no more scoring until the bottom of the 10th, when the Tigers loaded the bases, and a wild pitch by Steve Cishek allowed Cameron Maybin to score from third with the winning run. Alex Wilson, Shane Greene and Kyle Ryan each pitched an inning of scoreless relief. Ryan got the win.

The Tigers open a home set against the Central Division-leading Cleveland Indians tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will pitch against Danny Salazar. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Tigers have signed their first pick in the recent amateur draft. Matt Manning is a right-handed pitcher who had been planning to play baseball and basketball at Loyola Marymount.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off and open a weekend home series against the Washington Nationals tonight. Zach Davies will pitch against Max Scherzer.

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball last night…
– The Copper Country Miners v Dean Kangas-State Farm – no report.
– Wolverine-Orbit blanked Pat’s Food-Mosquito Inn 10-0. Coy Budweg pitched a complete game shutout. He struck out five, and walked just one. Darren Bausano and Mike Saari each had two hits and drove in two runs.

The Dean Kangas-State Farm team will no longer be playing home games at the Dollar Bay Field. They’ll share the Hancock Driving Park with Pat’s Foods-Mosquito Inn.

In Twilight League play tonight…
– The Copper Country Miners play Pat’s Food-Mosquito Inn at the Hancock Driving Park.
– Superior National Bank-Stanton faces Wolverine-Orbit at the Wolverine field.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons selected Marquette power forward Henry Ellenson with the 18th pick in the NBA draft last night. Coach Stan Van Gundy said his staff had projected Ellenson as a top-10 pick, and he was thrilled that he was still available. With the 49th pick, the Pistons chose Syracuse point guard Michael Gbinije.

NHL
The first round of the NHL amateur draft will take place tonight. The Detroit Red Wings have the 16th pick. The remaining six round will be held tomorrow.

NFL
A former Detroit Lions player has been shot while allegedly trying to break into a home in Portland, Oregon. Stanley Wilson II was drafted as a cornerback out of Stanford University in 2005, and spent three seasons with the team. He’s now 33. Police say Wilson was naked when an elderly couple spotted him trying to get into their home through a window. They say they shot him in self-defense. He was arrested, and is recovering in a hospital.

UP All Star Football Game LogoThe U.P. All-Star Football Game will be played tomorrow. Kickoff is at 1:00 at the Superior Dome. The rosters include only players who graduated last month. – The Copper Country Oldtimers Hockey League is holding a Sommerfest at the Hancock Beach. Activities begin at 1:00, with a potluck picnic at 4:00. Players, former players, friends and family are invited.
