Tigers Swamped – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

Yesterday’s entire high school sports schedule was rained out.

In baseball today, conditions permitting, Houghton plays at Ontonagon.

Tomorrow, Houghton, Calumet and L’Anse will play at the Negaunee Invitational.

In track and field, local teams will compete at the Houghton County Invitational at Lake Linden today.

Today’s Calumet Girls Golf Invitational has been canceled.

Finlandia

Cassidy Becia from Houghton will play college hockey at Finlandia University next season. Becia played Triple AAA youth hockey for the Madison Capitols. She’s also planning on playing softball for the Lions.

MTU

The Michigan Tech soccer team has added a recruit. Keighley Blindauer is a forward who played for Notre Dame de la baie Academy in Green Bay.

MLB

The rain wasn’t the only dismal event in Detroit yesterday, as the Tigers lost 13-0 to the Los Angeles Angels. Ryan Carpenter struggled in his first major league start of the season, slogging his way through five innings, and giving up six runs on eight hits. Zach Reininger and Eduardo Jiménez combined to allow six runs over three innings, and Reed Garrett gave up the final run in the ninth.

The Tigers will visit the Minnesota Twins tonight. Tyson Ross will start against Jake Odorizzi. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Tigers have put shortstop Jordy Mercer back on the injured list, with a recurrence of the quad strain that forced him to the sideline a few weeks ago. Outfielder Christin Stewart has been brought back from the injured list, where he was recovering from a quad strain.

To make room for Carpenter on the roster, the Tigers sent pitcher José Manuel Fernández back to Toledo.

Albert Pujols homered for the Angels in yesterday’s game, and became only the third player in Major League history to drive in 2,000 runs. The Detroit fan who caught the historic ball refused to give it – or sell it – back.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and begin a series against the Cubs in Chicago this afternoon. Gio Gonzalez will pitch against José Quintana.

NHL

In the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs last night, the Boston Bruins opened the Eastern Conference finals with a 5-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Western Conference final begins tomorrow, as the Saint Louis Blues visit the San Jose Sharks..

– The Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Denver Nuggets 119-108. That set is also tied 3-3.

Tonight…
– The Houston Rockets host the Golden State Warriors. Golden State leads that series 3-2.
