MLB

The Padres pounded out 18 hits on the way to a 14-3 victory over the Tigers Saturday night. Detroit actually claimed a brief lead in the bottom of the second inning, when Jake Rogers doubled home Zach McInstry. When play resumed after an 84-minute rain delay, Zack Short singled home two more runs. Starter Matt Manning did not return after the rain break, and San Diego teed off on replacement Mason Englert, who gave up 10 hits and was charged with nine runs before he was pulled in the fifth. Brendan White and Chasen Shreve were each charged with one run. José Cisnero gave up three. The only reliever not to allow a run was Short, who moved from the infield to the mound in the ninth, and gave up two hits, but no scores.

The Tigers host the Padres again this afternoon. Alex Faedo has been brought up from Toledo to start for Detroit. Joe Musgrove will pitch for San Diego. Coverage will begin at 11:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

To make room for Faedo, White was sent back down to the Mud Hens.

Sal Frelick’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning drove home Willy Adames with the winning run, as the Brewers edged the Braves 4-3 last evening. Frelick sparkled in his major league debut, with three hits, two RBI, one run scored, and a pair of highlight-reel catches in right field. Adrian Houser gave up a three-run homer, but struck out 10 over six innings.

The Brewers host the Braves again this afternoon. Julio Teheran will start against Bryce Elder.

To open a roster space for Frelick, Milwaukee designated outfielder Raimel Tapia for assignment. Tapis had been signed as a free agent in mid-June, after his release by the Red Sox.

NFL

The Lions have brought back veteran running back Justin Jackson. Jackson was the third-string option at the position for Detroit last season. Running back Greg Bell was released to make room.
