The Houghton High School volleyball team will see its first action of the season today at the Soo Invitational at Sault Ste. Marie.

MLB

The Tigers and Guardians split their doubleheader yesterday.

Detroit scored three runs in the first inning of the opener, with help from an Akil Baddoo home run and a Miguel Cabrera double, and went on to a 4-2 win. Tarik Skubal gave up a run on three hits over six innings, and struck out seven. Jake Rogers added a late home run.

In the nightcap, Detroit’s 1-0 lead evaporated when Cleveland scored four times off Andrew Vasquez and José Cisnero in the eighth inning. That spoiled a good start by Joey Wentz, who scattered four hits over five shutout innings.

The Tigers play in Cleveland again tonight. Matt Manning will start against Tanner Bibee. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Wentz was brought up from Toledo to serve as the extra player for the doubleheader.

Javier Báez is back with the Tigers, after his bereavement leave. Isan Díaz was returned to Toledo to make room on the roster.

After having been released by the Tigers, reliever Chasen Shreve has signed a minor league deal with the Reds.

The Brewers held off the Rangers 9-8 last evening, and snapped their three-game losing streak. Carlos Santana homered, and William Contreras, Willy Adames and Brice Turang each had three hits, as Milwaukee built a five-run cushion heading into the bottom the ninth. They needed it, because Texas plated four runs against Andrew Chafin and Devin Williams, before Williams was finally able to close it out.

The Brewers continue that series at Texas this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will start against Dane Dunning.

The Cubs lost and the Reds won yesterday, so Milwaukee leads the National League Central Division by two games over Cincinnati, and three over Chicago.

Twilight League

The Twilight League playoffs will conclude tomorrow at the Houghton field. Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker will face top-seed Garnet Garage in the first semifinal at 11. Northern Driveline will play second-seed Houghton Building Supply-Stanton in the second semifinal at 1. The winners will meet at 3 in the championship game, which we will broadcast on KBear 102.3.

NFL

The Lions host the Jaguars in their second preseason game today. Kickoff is at 1:00.

Detroit’s Denzel Mims experiment didn’t last long. Just a month after they added him via trade from the Jets, and with Mims sidelined by a pair of injuries, the Lions waived him yesterday. They then signed former Chargers receiver Jason Moore.

The Packers welcome the Patriots for an exhibition game tonight at 7:00.
