Tigers Split Doubleheader – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school softball yesterday, Hancock defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 9-5. The Lakes are scheduled to host Calumet in a doubleheader at the Boneyard this afternoon.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers split their doubleheader with the Pittsburgh Pirates last night, winning the opener 13-10, and dropping the nightcap 8-3.

Leonys Martin opened the first game with a lead-off home run. James McCann and Nicholas Castellanos went deep as the Tigers scored five times in the fourth inning. Castellanos and Miguel Cabrera each had four hits. Jeimer Candelario scored five runs. Starter Jordan Zimmermann gave up six runs over three ineffective innings.

Matthew Boyd struggled in the second game, giving up three runs in the third inning, leaving in the fourth, and taking the loss. Martin hit another home run.

That interleague series concludes in Pittsburgh this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will pitch against Ivan Nova. Because of Finlandia University baseball coverage on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage of the Tigers contest will begin at 12:10 on KBear 102.3.

The Milwaukee Brewers completed a sweep of their quick two-game series against the Kansas City Royals with a 6-2 victory last night. Jhoulys Chacín pitched into the sixth, gave up two runs, and got the win. Ryan Braun had three hits, and drove in two runs.

The Brewers open a four-game series against the Cubs in Chicago tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Kyle Hendricks.

The Brewers have placed first baseman Eric Thames on the disabled list. He tore a ligament in his thumb while diving for a ball in Tuesday’s game. He’s on the 10-day DL for now, but the injury typically takes six to eight weeks to heal. Reliever Brandon Woodruff has been called up.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team will play a doubleheader at Northland College in Ashland this afternoon. Our broadcast coverage of both game will begin around 10:40 this morning on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

The Finlandia University softball team has been seeded first in the upcoming American Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. The Lions will open against host SUNY-Delhi a week from tomorrow morning in the first game of the double-elimination competition.

NHL
In NHL playoff action yesterday, Boston became the final team to move into the second round, defeating Toronto 7-4 in the seventh game of their first-round series.

Round two begins tonight…
– Pittsburgh skates at Washington.
– San Jose plays at Las Vegas.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs last night…
– Houston advanced to the second round, with a 122-104 victory over Minnesota. The Rockets claimed that series 4-1.
– Toronto beat Washington 108-98. The Raptors lead that series 3-2.
– Cleveland got past Indiana 98-95. The Cavaliers are up 3-2 in that set.
– Oklahoma City downed Utah 107-99. The Jazz hold a 3-2 lead in that series.

Tonight…
– Boston tips off at Milwaukee. The Celtics lead that series 3-2.

NFL
The NFL amateur draft begins tonight, with the opening round. The Cleveland Browns will pick first, followed by the New York Giants. The Packers have the 14th selection, and the Lions will pick 20th. The second and third rounds will be held tomorrow, with the final four rounds on Saturday.
