Farmer

MLB
The Detroit Tigers split their doubleheader with the Chicago White Sox Saturday, falling 3-0 in the opener, and winning the nightcap 4-3. The Tigers collected just four hits off rookie Tyler Danish and four Sox relievers. Michael Fulmer took the tough loss, allowing a run in the second, and two in the eighth. In the second game, Buck Farmer struck out a career-best 11 batters over 6-1/3rd scoreless innings to earn his first major league win. John Hicks, J.D. Martinez and Victor Martinez homered for Detroit. All of Chicago’s runs came in the ninth-inning off Justin Wilson.

Kinsler

The Tigers wrap up that series in Chicago this afternoon. Jordan Zimmermann will face Miguel González. Pregame coverage will begin at 1:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Before yesterday’s games, the Tigers placed second baseman Ian Kinsler on the disabled list. He has a strained hamstring. They brought outfielder JaCoby Jones back from Toledo. The Tigers also purchased the contract of reliever Arcenio León from the Mud Hens. León is 30 years old, and has never made a major league appearance. He’s spent his entire career in the minors and the Mexican League. Chad Bell was sent down to Toledo to make room on the 25-man roster. To create space on the 40-man roster, the Tigers designated pitcher William Cuevas for assignment. The Toledo Blade newspaper also reported last night that outfielder Alex Pressley has cleared out his locker in the Mud Hens’ clubhouse, indicating that he could be called up to Detroit. There’s no word as to whom he would replace.

Bunning – Detroit Tigers image

Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Jim Bunning has died. Bunning pitched nine seasons for Detroit, and tossed a no-hitter in 1958. He pitched a perfect game for the Phillies in 1964, and also played for the Dodgers and Pirates. Bunning was a nine-time All-Star, and is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. He went on to serve his home state of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Jim Bunning was 85.

Anderson

Chase Anderson took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-1. Anderson struck out 11. Nick Ahmed’s leadoff single in the eighth inning broke up the no-hit bid. Anderson gave way to Rob Scahill. The D’backs only run came off Neftalí Feliz in the ninth. Milwaukee took the lead on Jett Bandy’s two-run double in the fourth inning. Jesús Aguilar homered.

The Brewers host the Diamondbacks again this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Patrick Corbin.

NFL
The Detroit Lions have bolstered their running game by signing a former Minnesota Vikings running back. No, it’s not Adrian Peterson – he’ll be playing for the new Orleans Saints. It’s Peterson’s backup, Matt Asiata, who has agreed to a one-year deal to play in the Motor City. Over five seasons with the Vikings, he’s averaged 3.5-yards per carry.
