The Hancock boys and girls swept their own Asphalt Invitational track and field meet yesterday. On the boys side, Ontonagon came in second, followed by Lake Linden-Hubbell, L’Anse, Dollar Bay, Chassell and Baraga. Alex Dewald of the Bulldogs won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, and anchored the wining 800-meter relay team. Gage Hawthorne won the shot put and discus. Jack Fenton won the pole vault and the 110-meter hurdles. See full results here.
On the girls side, Lake Linden-Hubbell finished a close second, followed by Chassell, Ontonagon, Dollar Bay, Baraga and L’Anse. Shitaye Sam from Chassell won the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs, and anchored the winning 3200-meter relay team. Lori Wardynski from Ontonagon took the 100-meter dash and the 300-meter low hurdles. The Detroit Tigers snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over the Washington Nationals last night. Nick Castellanos continued his hot start with a two-run homer in the fourth inning – his seventh of the season. The Tigers added three more in the sixth inning. Michael Fulmer gave up three runs on seven hits over five innings to get the win. He struck out six.
The Tigers wrap up that interleague set at Washington tonight. Former National Jordan Zimmermann will start against former Tiger Max Scherzer. Hear the first pitch at 7:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Milwaukee Brewers blasted the Miami Marlins 10-2 last night. Aaron Hill had three hits and scored twice. Zach Davies earned his first win of the season, giving up two runs over five innings.
The Brewers conclude that series at Miami tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Wei-Yin Chen.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night, the Penguins advanced to the conference finals with a 4-3 victory over the Sharks in the seventh game of their second-round series.
The Detroit Red Wings have brought Doug Houda back to the team as an assistant coach. Houda spent two terms as a player with the Wings in the’80s and ’90s. He’ll replace Tony Granato, who is now the head coach at the University of Wisconsin, and will focus on defense and penalty killing.
NBA
In the NBA playoffs last night, the Thunder got past the Spurs 95-91. Oklahoma City leads that set three games to two.
