MLB – Tigers
Todd Frazier’s grand slam off Joakim Soria in the 13th inning lifted the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers early this morning. Soria replaced Ian Kroll with runners on first and second, and one out. He gave up a single to Brandon Phillips to load the bases, struck out Ivan de Jesus Jr., and then gave up Frazier’s 22nd home run of the season. Miguel Cabrera and Tyler Collins homered for Detroit. Each team used seven pitchers. The playing time of the game was just short of five hours… with an additional hour-and-a-quarter rain delay.

The Tigers face the Reds again tonight in Cincinnati. Justin Verlander will pitch against Mike Leake. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Detroit is now just two games over .500, and trails Kansas City by five games in the American League Central. There may be some help on the way, though. Designated hitter Victor Martinez wrapped up his rehab assignment with Toledo last night, and plans to rejoin the Tigers tomorrow in New York. He could be reactivated if his balky left knee feels alright. Catcher Alex Avila has been working on his aching knee, and is scheduled to throw to bases today. If all goes well, he could begin a rehab assignment next week.

The Royals extended their A-L Central lead by bombing the Milwaukee Brewers 10-2 last night. Mike Fiers gave up six runs over five innings to take the loss.

The Brewers take on the Royals again tonight in Kansas City. Jimmy Nelson will start against Jeremy Guthrie.
