The Tigers have dropped a bagful of money on a 17-year-old Dominican outfielder. On the first day of the international signing period yesterday, they introduced Cris Rodriguez, the fourth-ranked prospect outside the U.S. Rodriguez is 6’4″ tall. He currently plays center field, but has the arm strength to move to either corner. Evaluators project he could be a 30-plus home run hitter. He’ll play in the Dominican League this summer. To seal the deal, Detroit wrote a bonus check for $3,197,500 – nearly half of their allotted international bonus cash. It’s the biggest such bonus the team has ever handed out.

The Tigers also inked deals with two Venezuelan players who are on the top-100 prospect list – center fielder Jose Ramirez and catcher Carlos Benavides.

The Brewers signed three top-50 prospects – outfielders Kenny Fenelon from the Dominican Republic and Brailyn Antunez from Jackson Chourio’s hometown in Venezuela, and shortstop Cristopher Acosta.
