MLB

The Tigers retired the number of storied second baseman Lou Whitaker last evening, then went out and thrashed the Rays 9-1. Current Detroit second baseman Jonathan Schoop homered. Harold Castro had three hits, drove in two runs, and scored twice. Garrett Hill pitched into the sixth, and gave up a run on six hits.

The Tigers entertain the Rays again this afternoon. Matt Manning will start against Drew Rasmussen. Coverage begins at 1:20 on 99.3 The Lift.

Before the game, the Tigers brought reliever Luis Castillo up from Toledo. After 11 years in the minors, Castillo made his major league debut in the ninth inning, allowing two hits, but no runs.

The Brewers’ late comeback fell short in a 7-5 loss to the Reds. Aaron Ashby gave up four runs over the first four innings. He left in the fifth, and took the loss. Milwaukee plated three in the fourth, with home runs from Andrew McCutcheon and Keston Hiura. Trailing by four in the bottom of the ninth, the Crew pushed two runs across, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Brewers host the Reds again this afternoon. Corbin Burnes will start against Graham Ashcraft.
