MLB – Tigers Reclaim AL Central Lead
The Detroit Tigers jumped out to a 6-0 lead, and then held on to beat the Kansas City Royals 6-4 yesterday. Anibal Sanchez retired the first 15 K-C hitters in order, but was touched for two runs in the seventh. The Royals added two more in the eighth off Tom Gorzelanny – the first of those was charged to Sanchez. Joakim Soria pitched a perfect ninth. Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer for Detroit.
The win leaves Detroit a half-game ahead of the Royals in the American League Central Division.
The Tigers have today off, and open a series in Chicago against the White Sox tomorrow night. Shane Greene will start against Jeff Samardzija. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
Detroit shortstop Jose Iglesias left yesterday’s game with tightness in his left groin. He’s considered “day-to-day,” and hopes to be ready for tomorrow’s game.
The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs 5-3 yesterday. Jimmy Nelson gave up three runs before leaving with two outs in the seventh, and the score tied. Will Smith relieved him, and earned the win when Aramis Ramirez singled in the two winning runs the top of the eighth. Ramirez also homered for the Brewers, who won back-to-back games for the first time this season, and claimed their first series victory.
That accomplishment wasn’t enough to save the job of Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke, who was fired after the game. Brewers’ president and general manager Doug Melvin said the decision was made because of the slow start this year, and the team’s fade from contention after a strong start last year. Media reports from several sources say that Craig Counsell will be named as the team’s new manager this morning.
Milwaukee shortstop Jean Segura was hit in the head by a fastball while batting in the eighth inning of yesterday’s game. Segura left the game, and is undergoing medical tests to make sure he hasn’t suffered a concussion.
The Brewers host the Dodgers in a four-game set beginning tonight. Kyle Lohse will pitch against Clayton Kershaw.
