Tigers Rained Out; Brewers Romp – Saturday Sports Wrap

The Detroit Tigers’ doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins yesterday was rained out. One of those contests will be made up as part of a twinbill today. Matthew Boyd will start against Randy Dobnak in the opener. Tarik Skubal will pitch for Detroit in the nightcap. Matt Wisler is expected to counter for the Twins. Coverage begins at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Yesterday’s other canceled game will be made up as part of a doubleheader next Friday in Minnesota.

Ryan Braun’s three-run homer powered the Milwaukee Brewers to a 9-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates last night. It was his 800th career extra base hit. Jedd Gyorko homered twice, and Jacob Nottingham also hit one out. Corbin Burnes gave up just three hits over six shutout innings.

The Brewers host the Pirates again this evening. Brett Anderson will pitch against JT Brubaker.

Nottingham was in the lineup because catcher Manny Piña has undergone knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus he suffered in Thursday’s game. Piña will miss the rest of the regular season, but could be available if the Brewers make the playoffs.

College

Big 10 conference football could begin as early as Thanksgiving. Multiple media reports describe negotiations among the member universities, health officials and media partners aimed at fielding games sometime during this academic year. Options include playing quarantined neutral-site games at domed stadiums. Officials say the 11 home states of all the Big 10 teams would need to meet standards for COVID-19 transmission rates and testing. A finalized proposal could be ready within the next two weeks. It would need to be approved by the presidents of the member universities.
