Tigers’ Magic Runs Out – Sunday Sports Wrap

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team completed a season-opening sweep of Alaska with a 2-1 victory Saturday night. Stiven Sardarian and Chase Pietila each found the net in the first period, then held on as the Nanooks outshot them 20-9 over the final two stanzas. Max Vayrynen earned the win in net with a career-best 29 saves.

Northern Michigan fell 6-1 at 12th-ranked Colorado College Saturday evening. Ryan Duguay scored his first goal as a Wildcat.

College Soccer

The NMU men’s soccer team plays at Saginaw Valley State this afternoon.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team breezed past Roosevelt University 3-0 ( 25-21, 25-20, 25-16) Saturday. Meg Raabe powered the Huskies with 12 kills. Tess Hayes had 35 assists and 11 digs.

College Football

The MTU football team’s four-game winning streak ended with a 24-20 loss to Davenport University Saturday. The game was tied 14-14 at halftime. The Panthers grabbed the lead with a third-quarter touchdown. Tech responded with a fourth-quarter TD, but failed to re-tie the contest when the extra point kick was blocked. Davenport added a late field goal to complete the scoring. Darius Willis caught the 25th touchdown pass of his career, setting a new school record. 

The NMU football squad fell 49-17 at second-ranked Grand Valley State Saturday night. The game featured just five completed passes – all by the Lakers.

NHL

Cam Talbot made 42 saves, as the Red Wings blanked the Predators 3-0 Saturday night. J.T. Compher, Andrew Copp and Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit. 

The Wings visit the Rangers Monday. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Warriors for a pre-season contest tonight. Listen for selected Pistons broadcasts again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers’ magical late-season run ended with a 7-3 loss to the Guardians in the fifth game of their American League Divisional Series. Tarik Skubal, the best pitcher in the American League this season, tired in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Cleveland loaded the bases, scored once on a hit batter, then got a grand slam from Lane Thomas. The Guardians advance to the American League Championship Series against the Yankees, beginning Monday in New York.

The National League Championship Series opens tonight, as the Dodgers host the Mets.

NFL

The Lions play at Dallas in a 4:25 game today on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has inked running back David Montgomery to a two-year contract extension worth a reported $18.25 million, with $10.5 million guaranteed.

The Packers host the Cardinals in a 1:00 contest.

In the Sunday night game, the Bengals visit the Giants, with the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
